I got around to making a proper reference for Videre, my Overwatch OC, sometime last year - after three years of not having one. I don't like trying to draw people very much, and that's part of why they have either a mask or a full-on helmet. Videre is also basically an Overwatch-sona, and the only way I was even remotely comfortable with having them be a regular human was to hide their face to some degree. I'm not sure why but I have more of a disconnect with my 'sonas when they have more of a defined face? Especially when it's towards the more humanoid end of things.
Okay, so about Videre.
I've decided that "Videre" is not a code name, like I'd initially decided, but their last name. First name is something they don't like to go by for whatever reason, and all anyone knows is that the initial is J. They're a sentry/spy and utilized for stealth missions. The tech they use is integrated into their nervous system for fine motor control, and it allows them to render themselves invisible and manipulate gravity and other spatial features around them. The metal casings on their shoulders and hips help them focus and have greater control over it. Their wings are technically devices that greatly enhance their spatial manipulation abilities, not proper wings, and do not need to be flapped, but just tilted in the appropriate direction relative to where they want to travel. They've earned the nickname "the Fly" because of their appearance, "fly on the wall" job, and having the potential to be a nuisance to anyone they've been sent to spy on.
While they wear their helmet on the field, the mask they wear at almost all times in public. They have a scar on the side of their face and are very self conscious about the condition of their teeth, which are chipped and have a chronic condition that renders the enamel transparent. The mask more than anything is for comfort outside of work. The ear pieces are for picking up communication links, radio signals, and cancelling out noise if need be. They also wear these outside of work on account of being noise-sensitive and liking to have some control over it. Their legs are prosthetics, from an accident during earlier stages of the ingrained tech going wrong, requiring amputation. They were transferred to the care of the medical team at Gibraltar to get fitted for prosthetic legs and undergo rehabilitation before they could resume any field work.
Videre is quiet and self-conscious, and won't talk about much unless they're spoken to first, and if it also happens to be about one of their interests. Otherwise they keep to themselves. Sometimes in a conversation they'll add a comment here or there, but getting them to ramble on takes a bit of prodding. They're very socially anxious, so they try to not get excited in conversations out of fear of embarrassing themselves. With those they consider friends, though, they let themselves loose a little easier.
They enjoy cooking and doodling when they're not working. They have to scope out the kitchen and make sure nobody else is around, because of being used to family barging in and asking for food to be made for them too. There's also a feeling of the kitchen already being “occupied” if someone else was there first, even if there’s room. They might make surprise food for others if they express interest in trying something they've made, but they’ll be nervous as hell until they try it and specifically tell them how it tastes.
Videre struck up a friendship with a certain moody Japanese cyborg during the Blackwatch era, finding common ground in both being amputees with cybernetic replacements and being experiments of sorts in their own ways. Despite falling out of contact after the fall of the Swiss headquarters and shutting down of Overwatch, the two managed to re-establish contact and communicated through letters for some time before the official recall, when they were able to properly reunite. They’re closer than ever now that they’re both in better places physically and emotionally.
