(Finally got around to uploading it here as well...)
A badge I did as a present for
vorndess for Furbase's Secret Santa round this year.
Done with India Ink pens, Polychromos, Copics and Acrylic Colors on Bristol paper.
Unfortunately neither did it photograph well (very blotchy because of the reflective Polychromos) nor scan any better (the golden acrylic paint looks really flat then), so it looks a little funky like that.
However, I did like the digital sketch I did for it much better, it was just to small for me to draw it properly in RM, so if you want to see that, look here: http://home.mnet-online.de/jesaja/F.....izze_final.jpg
Or a whole making of, but in German, at http://forum.furbase.de/thread.php?threadid=35546

Thx a lot! I lost a lot of detail inking it in badge size unfortunately, it's just to small for me to work comfortably. Glad you still like it ^.^
To get the colors/mood right I set up a little 3D-Scene in Cinema4D first, and lighted and posed it until it felt right, and worked on the sketch and coloration from there. You'll find the pics that accompany the making of on furbase there, if you're interessted: http://home.mnet-online.de/jesaja/Furry/Vorndess/

Ah, large size is perfect for me. I loved working with charcoal on Din A0-sized paper (~33" x ~47") in my art classes. Have to do that again sometime.
About using modeling apps for constructing and lighting a scene: That's what Poser ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poser ) was originaly made for, but of course you can use other programs like C4D as well, like I do, it's just not as convenient - but still - it can save you a lot of time, because you can easily check out a lot of variations once you have generally set up your scene, without having to sketch every single one.
I usually do this for more complex images, or ones with tricky lighting.
