We have to imagine that there's some kind of modification to mer-skin and mer-fur itself to make a life underwater possible. But that would be if the creature was born that way or evolved that way.
I suppose if it's just a TF you did to yourself for an afternoon or a weekend, you might not have taken that into account. >__>
