For one lavish commision I was required to invent a WWI era bi-lane of my own, that was nevertheless "futuristic." I started from basic principles and decided on a pusher-propellor design, with rear wings. This is not as far-fetched as it may sound. The Wright Brothers Flyer had a large rear wing and a pair of small forward stabilizers on a boom that was mounted forward. I felt constrained by the design to introduce no technology that was not readily available at the tmie. The rear facing engine made an in-line type seem more sensible than a radial engine. The molded windscreen could have been flexible celluloid, so that's no problem. The only detail I was forced to accept that I wasn't happy with was the retractable nose-gear, but it seemed unavoidale if I didn't want that turkey-leg handing in the breeze.

Cool! Box wing...(Long time ago I had the same kind of idea for a space fighter...And along comes Babylon 5 with thier Fury's...sigh...dead ringer...*Smirk*...)...
Perhaps a skinny skid up front somewhat like the tail draggers of yore? It could have a either a swivel so you could still brake stear or a lug spot for those little two wheeled drag lifts I've seen...?
One design thing I would do would be to put the pilot a bit higher in the cockpit like most of the old bi-planes to allow for betteer vision and scanning.
Now about markings...A red dawg house right? *Smirk*

Nose-wheel. A 1918 designer might agree that it should be retractable, but they would have to make do with it down, and maybe try it out in a 'faired' front housing, (with shock absorber?)? So it might look like a front vertical stablizer?
Duhred's front skid (sprung & done large) might work well, too.

Yeah...front wheel w/ fairng like a motor cycle...paint Eagle claws on all three wheel housings...
Or the retractable skid/wheel...did they have shocks/hydrolics back then?
I get the image of the pilot...or the optional spotter/nose gunner (For the larger scout/bomber variety) having to crank the thing up...

They had shock absorbers at least, by the mid-20s: Large rubber bands. Multiple arrays of large rubber bands that would stretch as the weight of the aircraft went onto the wheels. I kid you not. They were often hidden under those strut fairings (like on the 'Spirit of St. Louis').
