this is the redo of my buttpack idea. This one is a bit larger then the original, and is improved in more or less every area.
In addition to the dual strap closure, it also now has grommets set around the rim of the bag with 550 paracord to form a cinch which can tighten the bag. It has two belt loops around the back for fastening it in an upper position in normal configuration. It also has lower position loops for attatching it to a belt when straps are going to be used. On the top of the belt loops are two metal rings for attaching to load bearing suspenders, or a shoulder strap. the top of the pack now has a carry handle for when it isnt connected to anything.
Also, though it isnt visible in the picture, on the sides of the pack are two slots made with 2 inch webbing so you can hang stuff on them, like a machete or a hatchet. they could also be used for attaching MOLLE pouches.
Also random Kabar on my old ALICE pack. woo.

its too bad this style of pack when out of use after Vietnam. i styled this one loosely after the M1956 pack. Its completely different but its where i got the idea. I can imagine a lot of times when you need something thats not quite an ALICE pack but doesnt fit in an admin pouch.
It's too bad you didn't add a stormflap, but the paracord cinch strap is a good point. I have an ERDL pattern ALICE buttpack and the stormflap was made from a scrounged poncho, from the looks of it. Real nice, and holds just about anything you could think of if you don't wanna carry a pack with your deuce gear. If you haven't found them yet, both www.diytactical.com and www.supplycaptain.com sell most, if not all of the modern plastic hardware from buckles, tabs, and cordlocks that's the exact same stuff the government contractors use. They also have the military velcro in most colors and DIY Tactical also sells the cordura fabric and so on. So far, I've only picked up velcro and plastic hardware to do some mends. Good place to check out sometime.
I usually get my materials from geraldschwartzinc.com. I cant say I recommend DIYTactical, they almost never have anything in stock. Take a look at their store. It looks like they carry everything until you realize that everything is out of stock and has been for a very long time, so really they only have a couple of useless things at any given time. Im trying to see if I can order my metal hardware directly from the manufacturer, since there is a major manufacturer, Albest, very close to me.
Oh, and also DIYTactical decided not to stock anything in Olive Drab green any more, which is just retarded. Considering that practically everything I make is OD green or solid black, DIYTac isnt very useful to me anymore. I only keep ACU and coyote brown fabric around in case I get a military request, because 90% of the items i make are for outdoors use like hunting or hiking. And for that you need OD.
Yeah, I noticed that after I checked the links to make sure they worked. Had to use Supply Captain to get OD velcro for an M65 Field Jacket I picked up over the break. It's ridiculous how hard it is to find OD materials and gear now, and virtually impossible to get woodland. Yes, I understand the military switched over to something like five digital patterns and coyote, but OD's still very popular with outdoorsmen and law enforcement, as is the older woodland pattern.
It has its uses in a domestic market. And ideally, I'd still like to have two sets of field gear, one in woodland/OD, the other in coyote. Normally, I'm using mostly solid color gear for outings now that I've gotten self conscious about looking too militaristic, especially since one of my professors is a retired Army Lt. Colonel. But you simply can't deny the durability and versatility of surplus and commercial military gear.
