I drove an hour and a half to wind up in Suriel's apartment. The drive was fine, but well worth it.
For the first time in ages, I had someone to enjoy the Fourth's fireworks. I go to his dad's place for a wonderful bbq. It was amazing... Until the clouds started to darken. Warnings started to crop up on the radar as we tracked the storm. It ebbed and flowed, back and forth, growing and shrinking around us.
We risked it. We went to the beach in Iowa while hoping the storm wasn't going to impact the fireworks show. Immediately upon getting to the beach, I threw my shoes off. I've always loved going barefoot. Suriel... Did not. He stood by the towel placed down early in the day to symbolize this little spot was ours. Lightning struck out in the lake sending "Ooo's" throughout the beach. The rain started to come down, and that's when Suriel opened the umbrella, ushering me under it with him. I kept wiggling away because I enjoyed the feeling of the cold rain on my head with the warm sand under my feet, but the more the rain came, the longer my stays under the umbrella became.
There was something oddly romantic about standing on the beach with him, the smell of lake and rain mixing in the air, the sound of rain on the umbrella accompanying it. For while it was just us. Just him and I on that beach, an overwhelming surge of happiness surrounding me. I couldn't help but smile cheesily while looking at the man that I consider the love of my life. It was something so simple as him holding the umbrella over both of us as the storm rumbled in the distance. Many moments came in which I was staring at him in awe, we would make eye contact, my heart would speed up, and we would just simply laugh as if both of us were feeling the same exact emotions.
That was when the text notification came. Fireworks canceled due to the storm. My heart sank. I wanted so badly to see those little balls of gunpowder, but I couldn't be sad or mad about it. Just being with him on that beach was amazing. It was only after we started to pack up that someone in the distance started shooting off fireworks,, it was almost as if it was a personal show just for the people who stuck it out. For the people still on that beach... Just for us.
"I guess we got our fireworks in the end anyway."
