Collecting Incredible Hulk #106-111, written by Greg Pak (with Jeff Parker on #111). Artists, Gary Frank (#106, 107), Leonard Kirk (#108, 111), Carlo Pagulayan (#109, 110).
In Incredible Hulk #106, the Hulk has returned to Earth and is ready to smash all the puny humans. However, some of the puny humans will fight for the Hulk. Meanwhile, Amadeus Cho confronts She-Hulk and Doc Samson.
It would have probably made more sense if I reviewed the World War Hulk trade before I started this one. Then again, I have never been one to go for the sensible option. Besides, I wanted to start reviewing the Incredible Hercules series and I felt I had better start here seeing that these World War Hulk tie-ins are a prelude to Incredible Hercules. I will get around to reviewing Planet Hulk and World War Hulk soon enough, I promise.
In Incredible Hulk #107, Amadeus Cho prepares to assemble a team of heroes to fight by the Hulk's side with the money he stole from Warren Worthington III, aka Angel of the X-Men.
You can understand why Amadeus Cho is so angry. The Hulk was his friend and Earth's so-called heroes blasted him into space. Now the Hulk is back and is the angriest he has ever been. We get to see the Hulk smash everybody in the main story, but these issues are all about Amadeus assembling a team of heroes to help him. It was funny to see Korg again after his scene-stealing performance in Thor: Ragnarok. Well, I say his performance. Movie Korg isn't anything like comics Korg. Movie Korg is actually fun!
In Incredible Hulk #108, Rick Jones is in Manhattan to try and talk some reason into the Hulk, but Miek of the Warbound doesn't want the Hulk to stop smashing.
This issue is mostly told from the point-of-view of Rick Jones and Miek. Rick was the Hulk's very frist friend on Earth and Miek was the Hulk's very first friend when he ended up on Sakarr. Much is made about the similarities between their friendships with the Hulk. Miek doesn't seem to be all that stable. Then again, growing up in utter filth as the lowest of the low might not be the best thing for a stable upbringing.
In Incredible Hulk #109, Amadeus Cho begins to doubt his faith in the Hulk when he discovers the horrors lurking beneath Madison Square Garden.
Amadeus Cho keeps insisting that the Hulk isn't a monster, but that all changes when he discovers that the Hulk is making the captured heroes fight to the death in Madison Square Garden. He also keeps saying that the Hulk isn't a killer. I find that to be incredibly naive. Look at all the damage the Hulk has caused over the years and tell me that somebody hasn't ever died. Just ask Risk Jones about all the abuse the Hulk has put him through over the years.
In Incredible Hulk #110, Amadeus Cho forces the Hulk to confront whether he is a hero or if he truly is a monster.
Amadeus Cho is still determined to talk some sense into the Hulk. It goes just as well as you would expect. This issue goes out of its way to explain that the Hulk has never killed anyone. I still find it unlikely. Somebody must have died in all that instruction, but this comic keeps insisting that nobody ever died in one of the Hulk's rampages. There was that one time when Banner was seperated from the Hulk and the mindless Hulk destroyed a town in New Mexico, but that doesn't count apparently.
In Incredible Hulk #111, the events of the previous issue threaten to tear the Renegades apart as they try to defeat the hellish new threat rising from the ruins of Avengers Tower.
Doctor Strange channelled the power of Zom to try and defeat the Hulk, but Zom's essence left Strange when the Hulk smashed him and is now running free. Zom is out to find the next most powerful vessel to take control of and use it to destroy the Earth. The vessel that Zom chooses is Iron Man's Hulkbuster armour. I'm not sure if I like Amadeus Cho here or not. He is coming off as a real jerk. Being one of the smartest people in the world doesn't mean that you can go around being mean to people. I guess he doesn't learn to chill until he starts hanging out with Hercules.
I really enjoyed Incredible Hercules, so I found this trade to be quite the letdown. Maybe I should have skipped this and gone straight on to the Incredible Hercules series proper. That's what I get for wanting to see how Hercules and Amadeus Cho first met. Thankfully, things to get better from here.
My rating: 3 stars.
