I was totally in the same boat..I just gave watercolors a new attempt AND I LOVE them!
Try spending some money on really good paper- trust me..its all in the paper! Cheap paper just soaks in the water and is impossible to control- yet on good paper you can play with a bubble of water/color and make it do what you want!
