Licenssse To Kill poster - by AshasCadence
Art by
AshasCadence! Go tell her how AMAZING this immaculately faithful recreation of the original poster for LTK is!

In this world, today is the 30th anniversary of the USA&UK-wide theatrical release of 'Licence to Kill' - it came out on July 14th, 1989.
What better day to release the Sondian version of the poster that surely existed in some other world, beyond this one we call our own? :}===<

A textless version of the poster, and a small Ames Sond scene can be found here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/37249672/

This is the teaser poster for Licenssse To Kill, the 16th Ames Sond adventure. Below is some of the ad copy from the press release at the time.
When Ames' oldest friend, Felix Leiter, is brutally maimed, and the newlywed Mrs Leiter is killed, agent 00S sets out on a quest for revenge against the man responsible: Franz Sanchez, a ruthless druglord.
Follow Sond from the Florida Keys to the Central American country of Isthmus, as he teams up with the beautiful Pamela Bouvier, undercover CIA agent and former army pilot. Together, the beautiful but tough American secretary bird and the handsome British spy serpent will face Sanchez's vast narcotics empire, from smuggling on the Caribbean sea, to a covert cocaine production facility.
MI6 washes their hands of Sond's vendetta, leaving our hero with just his own personal reserve of guile, cunning and charm. But will it be worth it? Ames will surely need to dig more than just two graves as he seeks vengeance... in theatres, March, 1989!

This has special significance for me. Licence to Kill was the very first Bond movie I ever saw; went with my parents to see it in the theaters and it really set the measure for every other Bond movie after that. Heck, Timothy Dalton was Bond for me, though I certainly liked Sean Connery and enjoyed Roger Moore enough. I was a little disappointed when they didn't bring Dalton back for his contracted third movie, as both Licence to Kill and The Living Daylights are two of my favorites and I found his performance to be top notch and totally lethal. Connery was suave and confidant, Moore was whimsical and yet had an air of British dignity about him. But Dalton... Dalton could have been an assassin; you could see in his eyes that he could kill without hesitation.
Seeing this poster rendition brings it back and makes me want to watch it again. Secretary Bird is a great choice for Bouvier, but what about Lupe? Sanchez? Krest? Dario? Truman Lodge? Professor Joe? Man, this one would be great to see more of.

The first Bond/Sond movie we see is a very important factor in determining certain things for your experience and perception of the series, indeed. I started with GoldenEye, myself, so Brosnan has a special place for me, as does GE. I think everyone knows/agrees it's the best Brosnan era one. Although I know you prefer TWINE! :}
But yes, I always wished Dalton had had his third, because I really did love his colder, more intense take on things. I personally like Living Daylights more than LTK, though.
As for the Sond versions: I'm still deciding about Sanchez. He might be a rhinoceros with a lot of scars on his face, and gouges in his horns. Lupe's character will be, I'm almost 100% certain, a confluence of Sanchez's kept pet and his kept woman. Ie: Lupe + his iguana!
Krest, I kinda imagine an older, out of shape sea otter. Truman Lodge is something like a ferret who thinks he's some big weasel tough guy, but he's not that big or that tough. Dario, I imagine a slender lizard, with a crazy look in his eye. And, Proffesor Joe, to me, seems like a horse or donkey [he's kind of an ass, after all] with a big toothy, winning, seemingly-kind, gleaming smile.
Lastly: Thanks for the fave! :}

I think Living Daylights feels more like a regular Bond movie; Licence to Kill really took some chances and had Bond stepping out of his usual modus operandi. That said, I love Living Daylights and like you probably like it just a little bit more than Licence to Kill; but still, they are two of my favorites and if I had to make a top five list, both would be on it.
One of the things I remember reading about the chemisty between Dalton and Robert Davi was that they were like fire and ice together. They just offset each other perfectly. So a Rhinocerous, a big hulking scared fellow like that, would match well the pock-marked face Davi brought to Sanchez. But he has to be suave and utterly in command. I think a Rhino could do that.
Krest as a sea otter works; I can see the leer in his eyes, and the explosive decompression, yikes! Ferret works for Lodge, awesome! Dario and Professor Joe's choices sound good and I can see them when I close my eyes. Professor Joe was just plain hilarious to watch, so yeah, donkey with goofy but winning smile works.
And you are welcome for the Fave! I've been eagerly looking forward to a Sondian version of either Dalton movie for quite some time.

Good choice for Lupe! Being a sexy iguana would pair well with Sond there.

And, you're right, LTK really mixes things up a lot, with Felix getting married, then maimed. I mean, Felix appeared enough times that it was unthinkable for something to happen to him, I imagine, at the time. Can you imagine if someone had harmed M or Q or Moneypenny, somehow? But then MI6 would support some kind of retaliation. With Felix, it makes sense that MI6 thinks of it as Bond's personal vendetta.
[Although, in the books, Felix was maimed by a shark in the events of the book version of L&LD, and then shows up many times with a prosthetic foot and arm (and grabber-hook-pincer hand thing). L&LD was the second book, so imagine the movies in that order, and all the Felix-appearances re-contextualized to have various newer prosthetics throughout the decades.]
Anyway, back to LTK: Was it the first time Bond 'went rogue'? Whereas nowadays, he's constantly going a bit behind MI6's back, it seems like a bigger deal in LTK. I think LTK was EON Productions' attempt to do a gritty 80s drug-based plotline, and it kinda works out that way. Maybe, though, audiences didn't really care if Bond did that very american style thing, since so many other movies were doing it just fine?

Well, Felix had been largely absent from the Roger Moore movies, so seeing him again in both Dalton flicks was a bit of a surprise. Further, they used the same actor in both LTK and L&LD, which makes for an interesting irony since, as you note, it was in L< that he was maimed by the shark.
I think LTK was definitely the first time Bond went rogue; he did disobey his orders before hand once or twice (in The Living Daylights he didn't kill Pushkin as ordered after all). But he'd never gone completely out of bounds before. And yeah, TLK has a definite 80s feel, but that's okay, it's when I grew up so its more meaningful to me too. I am not sure how audiences reacted per se to LTK; the reason we didn't get any Bond for six years after that was the lawsuits (man did that suck).

Oh, I just meant that LTK didn't do very well at the box office. It had some stiff competition, but from what I know of the general consensus of fans, LTK is under-appreciated for some reason. I wonder if that's just that people have some weird negative connotation with the idea that it's the one that 'did badly enough to almost kill the franchise' - even if it's not bad, the perception is the reality, you know?
Personally, I like LTK more than something like DAD, which was so crazy. Although, insanity like what's in DAD is its own kind of fun too.

How could LTK "almost kill the franchise" when that franchise includes Moonraker? I mean, seriously? *grumbles at all the critics*
I enjoyed DAD but yeah, very crazy and went so far over the top in so many ways... still, having the bad guys with a souped up car too was a lot of fun.

In the world of Sond, Ernst Stavro Blofeld is a cold, calculating centipede. He can be seen near the bottom of this Sond poster, on a bobsled: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/34370990/

Goodness! This poster is gorgeous!
The fabric of the clothing is done immaculately. I see he's undone his tie, but I'm wondering about the other black straps on his shoulders. Maybe suspenders? I suppose without defined hips a naga may need suspenders to keep any articles of clothing up around the "waist" area. I'd been thinking about where Sond would keep his gun if he didn't have a holster on a belt if he didn't have pants!
And it looks like LTK came out the exact day after I was born! There's a lot of reminiscent comments about the movie and I don't remember a thing. :( I really need to set up a day/week/month to rewatch these Bond films.

It could be suspenders, sure [or 'braces', as the brits say], but I believe those are shoulder holster straps, for Sond's PPK. Bond has always been a shoulder holster guy, which fits for Sond - as you said, a belt holster wouldn't work for him.
Also, suspenders for a snake would make sense, if there was a lower-body garment to hold up, but typically there isn't a lower-body garment at all! With Sond, the idea is usually 'he just needs something to tuck his shirt into', and I tend to have that be thick cummerbund-style strap-things, as one can see in the QoS poster. I guess a set of braces could keep the cummerbund up, but I think the idea with them is that they're tied tightly enough on their own, to stay in place.
About your birthday and LTK: Oh, nice! But I don't see why you'd remember it better if it was released one day before your date of birth. Do Minus-1-day-olds have great memories for movies? :}===<
But yes, get on the re-watch train! No Time To Die is a-comin'! Eventually!
Also, thanks for the fave. :>

Haha, oops. I suppose I meant to say: people are having fond reminisces of the movie, but I can't remember a think from it. Where just the trivial idea that it came out after my birth by a day was a separate thought. :P But you must have understood that. I just need to make that clear.
And now I remember what shoulder holsters are-- yes! Obviously that makes a lot of sense for gangsters and secret agents and even femme fatales needing those concealed carries.
I just feel ashamed at having forgotten a good Bond movies, even frustrated at myself for having such a lazy brain. :|

Don't be ashamed, there's twenty four of the bloody things, with a twenty fifth on the way! O:
You'd have to be a weirdo like me to remember them all. LtK is the 'revenge story' one. Watch the trailer or something! :}

I may be the biggest Bond fan you ever meet. >___>
But yes, always happy to have another person who'll extra-appreciate my Ames Sond things, by virtue of you knowing Bond better than other people.
I've written alt-versions of 007 scenes for the 'Sondverse', you'll find them on most of those Bond art posts.

I prefer The Living Daylights, for the Dalton-era. I do love the end sequence on this one, with all the tanker trucks. And, I'm very fond of Pam Bouvier [the other main Bond girl in License to Kill].
Still, I never knew that Talisa Soto [Lupe Lamora in LTK] went on to play Kitana, in the 1995 version of Mortal Kombat. Nice connection, thanks for letting me know. :}
Also, speaking of Dario: That was Benicio del Toro! He's gone on to be in so many cool movies. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001125.....ref_=tt_cl_t_9
Thanks for the fave on this (and so much else!)
