Name: Chikorita
Classification: Leaf
Type: Grass
Number: 152
Evolutie: Chikorita – Bayleef (level 16) – Meganium (level 32)
Hoogte: 90 cm (excluding headshield)
Gewicht: 6 – 7 kilogram
Habitat: Open grasslands
Description: Chikorita move about in herds of circa 30 pokémon, led by a dominant male. The public image of Chikorita is of an animal with a leaf inexplicably attached to its head. This is not surprising, as this is how it was portrayed not only in native art, but also in art in other areas of the world until the pokémon were imported to Kanto and artists did not have to rely on second- or thirdhand information anymore. In fact, the ‘leaf’ is a shieldlike protrusion on the head, which is surprisingly narrow at the bottom. It uses this shield in displays of dominance. The shield can also measure the temperature and humidity to a surprising degree. It is believed that Chikorita use this information to find water. Apart from this, the distinctive form of Chikorita holds true: Its hips are lower than its shoulders, and its hindlegs shorter than its frontlegs. On its hindlegs it has three separate toes, but on its front legs these have fused together into one. It has bright green decorative scales around its neck. Apart from these scales, Chikorita is covered with a leathery skin reminiscent of lizards. They live on open grasslands, where they (obviously) live almost exclusively on grass. However, in captivity they have shown a particular liking for soft fruits. Chikorita is most well known for the sweet scent it produces. This scent attracts other Chikorita. It is used by the herd to stick together, even when they are too far apart in tall grass to see one another. The dominant male always has the strongest aroma. The scent probably also allows Chikorita to identify others of its species. The production of this fragrance takes place in special scent glands under the green scales in Chikorita’s neck. On the lower side of each scale is a small tunnel where the fragrance leaks out. The scent has a calming effect on pokémon and people. When a herd of Chikorita is in danger, the pokémon stand close together. The dominant male then walks around the group, producing a larger amount of the [geurstof], to calm the opponent. In some cases, the predatory pokémon actually falls asleep. Illegal breeders would milk the scent glands to sell the fragrance to perfume makers, producers of sleeping pills and, most profitable, illegal drugs manufacturers. A large international campaign to put a stop to this has been very succesful.
Chikorita are very kind, calm, playful pokémon that can be introduced in a family without any problems. When in captivity, it is advisable to have at least two Chikorita to prevent loneliness.
