Logan busied himself putting the on Mera's new armor, provided by the Normad lord. Lord de Trobliand had been generous in his gifts, and the dragon had been given a two part-transition armor, a large coat of overlapping scale mail over a gambeson blanket that covered the dragon’s head and back, along with four pieces of steel plate armor that protected the dragon’s vulnerable throat, neck and torso.
“Have your dragon wear this.” The Normad had stated matter-of-factly right before they had began embarking on the ships, having six servants move forward a crate.
Logan stared. The scale mail and plate would have cost a fortune in the steel used alone, much less the labor.
“Where did this come from?”
“Home. I figured that you and your dragon could use more protection. I don’t know what happened to its arm there during the previous war, but I’m your friend and I don’t want anything to happen to you riding that thing.”
“Thanks.” Logan thought for a second.
“Why didn’t you give me this during the Great War? It could have been useful at Caldern or Mills Crossroads.”
The Normad lord spat into the harbor. “Do you realize how long it took to make this? Caldern was less than a year since I told you to kill your dragon. I’m glad you didn’t, but the fickleness of the great wyrms did not provide me a lot of time now did it?”
The dragon’s armor was heavy, but it was lighter than a full plate and it afforded more protection to the dragon than he would have been naked. Meratezatgh however was only minimally impressed.
“Maybe it’d protect me from ballista bolts, but I’m also not as fast or maneuverable.” The dragon said as he slipped on the scale mail coat. "Heavens it's heavy."
“I don’t want you to die on my account, Mera.” Logan replied as he helped straighten out the mail coat before picking up the individual plate pieces to hand to the dragon. “If you're not as effective, I don’t really care.”
“If you don't want me to die on your account, maybe you shouldn't allow yourself to be guilted into doing things where I have a good chance of dying-like participating in another war.” Came the response.

Yep! Though the Sassanids probably would have had greater developments before their empire was abruptly destroyed :P. If anything, I think Byzantine held onto the cataphract for too long, though that was probably necessary against the more maneuverable horse archers of the Middle East (too bad it was their better armored Latin Enemies that break the back of Byzantine).
This was based on late-period full body Eastern Roman cataphract design-the Back North work is more historically accurate. Since my story (very loosely) follows historical chronology, I figure by the 1330s it is already the twilight of scale armor with Western Europe already shifting from full chainmail to half-plate. A wealthy lord could certainly afford a massive (slightly dated) armor, perhaps buying large surplus volumes for relatively cheap from the Eastern lands.

I mean I agree that Lamellar armor is far more versatile (see the Chinese Empires holding on to it until the 1800s), but I think from the tradition cavalry charge (or hacking through a city) perspective of nobility plate would be more protective. The Komnenian Restoration focused so much on the East that they forgot that by that point Byzantine was more a European state than an Asian one and the warfare situation would follow suit.
Lol this the first time I've ever heard anyone say good things about the Latin Empire, an Empire than collapsed faster than the Crusader States and also broke the cork holding back the Islamic Empires...
