Well here's my little homage to Hanna Barbera studios. It's my version of Wally Gator as he appeared in 1961!
Wally is painted on traditional acetate (using actual professional grade animation cel-vinyl paints). I did my best to match his original colors and I believe that really Wally's colors were pretty much default pigments right out of the bottle from that era, and things don't seem to have changed much over the years. The only paint mixing that I did was on his belly.
The background is a kind of semi-silhouette floral scene that I call "The Jellystone" style: very basic and simplistic. I used gouache and acrylic on the background and painted it on illustration board ('cause I'm tired of watercolor paper wrinkling on me). ;)
Anyway this is my second traditional piece with Wally Gator and by far the best. The media didn't really fit my scanner bed too well so there's a bit of reflection and shadow, but over all the scan came out pretty good.
I hope that you like!
I produced Wally solely for my own use as a companion piece for an actual production cel (circa '61) that will soon be in my possession. :)

*hugs a gator* Hey there, studness. Thank you very much for the kind words. I was kinda blown away myself. Believe it or not I had him painted for a few days and just this day took the opportunity to look at him fully and put him on his background. Once I have him framed he'll really stand out.
I'm finding a comfort level with cel painting, it's tough but if you can cel paint then other things aren't as bad. Wait'll you see my 3 dimensional deep sea diver's helmet. I'm really proud of that one! I should have it online in a few days or so.

Wow, just WOW! That brings back some of my oldest television memories, I used to watch those cartoons on our old black and white tv set. You had to wedge a matchbook behind the VHF tuning knob or else the set wouldn't work. I also remember a box on top of the set that turned the antenna on the roof! Gosh I'm old!!
*chuckles* Yes you are old dimetro-dude. __but that's ok, I'm old too and I know just what you're talking about. Ahh, the good old days when you could actually see something with rabbit ears, even movies.
Now I've got a digital tuner and I get nothing but sports and American Idol, both of which I HATE! So, I usually watch the weather channel now. The pictures looks perfect too, but there's nothing on the tube these days unless you pay for cable or satellite, which I'll never do. I don't even get PBS anymore. Feh on improved technology. Give me Wally Gator any day! ;)
Thanks so very much for the great comment, Sailback. ;)

We did the matchbook behind the channel knob too, but in our case it was a piece of cardboard. I'm sure plenty of other folks did too - it happened when the mechanical contacts between the knob and the tuner started getting out of alignment, which was why we got yelled at when we turned the knob toofast! - that's what did it.
*hugs* Thanks Lord Duck for the super kind words. I was rather pleased with how Wally turned out. I framed him yesterday and it looks better than I could have hoped!
Yes, I got a Wally Gator ref-sheet cel on the way. I can't wait to get it! Of course I'm going to frame it myself since I have a mat cutter and have framed my own art work. I will display the original Hanna Barbera cel next to my own Wally Gator, have them side by side as a little homage to the gator and Hanna Barbera too. :)

I want to thank you for that very cool comment. Not many 'round here appreciate Wally as he "should" be appreciated and I'm very glad that you like it. I've got Mr Gator hanging on the wall now next to an original cel from 1961 of Wally Gator from Hanna Barbera. They look good together. It's hard to go wrong when you decorate with gators. ;)
Wow, this cel just gave me an idea for an incredible cross-over cartoon: Wally disguises himself as one of the 'Fantasia' gators because he has to... well, he has to do something or other in their universe! Can you imagine the hilarity that would ensue when a Disney gator comes eye to eye with an H-B one!? (No matter what happens, Mr. Twiddle has to get sat on by Hyacinth at some point...)
*laughs* Brilliant! I can only imagine the shock of all characters when HB and Disney Universes clash. X)
__and yes, Mr Twiddle has to be crushed beneath the Hippo. ;)
I"m pleased my little scene has brought about such imaginative dialog. Wally's hangin' on my wall even now. I'm thinking that I need a Peter Potimus for balance. Perhaps Peter and Hyacinth can date?
