I based Mistress Jade on Dorothy Lamour. To draw her as an older, stouter woman (she's in her late 60's here) I found a picture of Ms. Lamour at about the same age, and used a costume design from one of her "Road..." films. Oddly, I had initially sketched Jade's face in the first appearance, didn't like it, and then went looking for a photo of Ms. Lamour. And when I compared the two, the expression and facial proportions were identical.
