It's been a joy to watch the progress of the project, even more so to watch the actual work. I absolutely love the end result. :D One thing I especially like is how much the mask looks like Haze herself. That might sound funny, but I notice that a lot of times the sculpt turns out different from the original concept. It's awesome to see that she looks just like how you designed her (at least to me, anyway.)
Do you plan to make more masks as personal projects or commissions?

As you were first up in showing the final portfolios, I bet you scared some of the people who were following you on the list! Your slide show was very professional, and though your voice wavered a little (hey, it happens in speeches) I'm going to bet you did well.
Amazing work. It's been something else watching you go through the process and your little creation montage definitely summed it up a bunch. Once you get the entirety of the costume all ready to roll we're gonna wanna see videos of it in action! And a lot more closeups to see your airbrushing! :D

Absolutely amazing. Like you I've always been interested in movie make-up/effects and monsters. Your work on this project and others has been immensely inspiring, and I would very much like to thank you for that. :3
Can't wait to see this costume entirely finished. It's already impressive in its current state, so the final will definitely be something to drool over, haha. XD

Awesome! I enjoy seeing your work as well and the changes you've made to your costume. I'm glad to inspire! x3 That's flattering, thank you :) What movies/effects have inspired you?
I can't wait to wear the damn thing, hahaha. Gonna be fun to scare the childrens!

You are most welcome! I'm a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro's films, so when you mentioned the characters and actors from them as one of your big inspirations I was quite happy, haha. I am also very inspired by Miyazaki's creatures, though they're animated.
I've been fighting for years whether to go for a degree in illustration or try to find something effects-related. I enjoy both the concept and physical creation aspects so much. One of the things I really enjoy about costuming is being able to totally change someone's appearance, and sometimes even how they act (who doesn't want to roar at someone in a monster suit?). There's something really awesome about creating a "living" piece of art.

Yeah, for sure! I love him because he's like "we're going to do as much real effects as we can, and a small amount of it can be 3-D". I really respect him for that. And, I just LOVE Doug Jones, I'm working and getting to meet with him some time. It's good to have inspirations from things other than movies. I want to try my hand at sculpting a maquette similar to something from a Miyazaki movie, I think it would feed my want to sculpt and my love of culture/myth, which is always strong in his works. x3
Illustration is good because it is a very broad major. You can do from more graphic styles and a more graphic design style all the way to a more fine art, painting style. And from something commercial like editorial to something more on the fine art stream of "I make it, you buy it" pieces. Even broad enough for me to get away with sculpting XD Because there's also the entertainment side of illustration too, which is what I was more into.
If I am able, I would love to go to an effects school. There's one I have been looking at. It'll all depend on how paying off loans and other moneys go for the next few years x-x Have you looked at any places?
Yes! That's exactly it. Making something come to life! Also, making it able to be touched. One critique I have for CGI is that it's on the screen and nothing else.. It's much more fun to be able to turn it around and hold it.

That's one thing I hugely respect del Toro for, is sticking to real life effects when EVERYONE is using CG to death these days, not that there's anything wrong with it. But as you said, it makes a huge difference both on the screen and for the actors to be able to see and touch something.
Illustration is the degree I'm currently signed up for, I'll be starting it sometime this month at the Academy of Art University in CA (though I'll be taking online classes). I just transferred from a Game Art and Design degree at the Art Institute Online. I changed degrees because I decided I'm much more interested in the actual art than the programming of games :P They had plenty of art classes in that degree as well but I wanted something that would allow me to do something more versatile. They were also, for some reason, much more traditional art classes, which is fine, but these days there's a huge need to practice digital art/painting, and we pretty much weren't allowed to do that or any kind of character design til classes much later in the program. (Pardon me, I'm rambling. XD)
I have much love for concept art, and I generally eat up any special features on movies with creatures and special effects (I'm always sad there's not more! The only movies that have ever come close to sating my appetite as far as that goes have been the extended Lord of the Rings movies, with all... 18 hours or whatever of special features. My mum thinks I'm deranged for being able to sit through all that.) Quite often I'll get even more interested in how they made the things for the movie than the movie itself. I would seriously love to work at WETA. Wouldn't mind moving to New Zealand to do so either, haha.

Yeah, a good example is the new star wars. None of the characters had any life cos they weren't able to react to anything.
Ah, okay. Illustration's good, like I said before, because it's so broad of a major. We have Game Art at the school I graduated from too and though I did take some of the classes (environmental design, concept sketchbook ideation and character design) I wasn't interested in the 3-D graphics. I kept getting nudged to use Z-brush by people, one person saying how much I could make just by switching my sculpting to it. And I was like "No..." I'd rather be doing something I ENJOY and not be staring intently at a computer screen in the same fashion that I stare at a sculpture in real life. I'd def. loose some vision then!
Oh special features... I will watch ANY of them. There's always something great going on in them, hahaha. Especially all monster movies (especially the bad ones). Yeah, there's some people that just can't sit thru them with me either... people with no patience, hahaha. But while attending school it was easier to find those who would watch because we were all artistsie fartsie types, lol. Oh WETA! I love them. They are the ONLY 3-D that I can stomach, pretty much. And Greg Broadmore is such a cool guy, I love talking to him x3 He's always at comic con and we've done a some corresponding thru e-mails this last semester :) He's so nice! And his work is just amazing! I would totally work there... even though it's cold... XD
Check out Greg Broadmore, if you haven't, Terryl Whitlatch, Terese Nielsen, Claire Wendling, Iain McCaig, the behind the scenes books for Where the Wild Things Are, Star Trek and all the Star Wars (the movies sucked a butt, IMO, but the stuff behind them is amazing to look thru). Those are some of my favorites. :)

Yeah I'm much looking forward to all the classes I'll be taking soon, not a single one of them looked boring or irrelevant to my interests when I looked through all the writeups on them. Here's hoping!
I love WETA's stuff, and the fact that they take the time and effort to make things look as real as possible even when it comes to CG. It seems they love to have people with all kinds of skills, and many fresh out of school, etc, so who knows. I can dream, haha.
Thanks for the recommendations! I will definitely be looking into them, always happy to find out more about the people behind the effects.

There's also effects sculptors and makers: Steve Wang and Rick Baker (Werewolf of London and the new Wolfman) are two off the top of my head right now. I can't think of others right now... But Steve Wang has been in the industry since he was 17 when he worked on Predator... He's just...amazing. Also, anyone from Spectral Motion (they did Hellboy and Hellboy II) and Stan Winston Studios (or Legacy Studios, those who left Stan Winston's after he died). :B
We should talk more! and be geeky. LOL

Fantastic work; you deserve every last bit of praise and support for your work - to see you take a concept and take it through to final realisation has been mindblowing. Bravo!
Your work has been a great inspiration to me; I hope someday I can find the time to work on things like this and 'make fantasies real' in a whole new way!
Also: thank you for being open with the process - it shows that it's not impossible to do these things properly, and that materials science isn't something to hold you back!

Ah, sure! If you wanna post it up. If you want them up soon, hahaha. But I might be able to get on there later today or tomorrow... Dunno. I'll check it out though, I don't remember if I was on there or not!
Unfortunately, no, I will not be in attendance at FC :C Not enough time to figure it out/money to go/people to go with, etc etc. But next year I will so be there, and Haze will def. be finished by then and she's SO going there, hahaha. Have a good time! I'd love to see pictures and goings-on :)

This is incredibly impressive! I watched you because I saw one of your early snapshots of the Haze project in someone else's favorites, and believe me I've been really giddy to see the final result of all your hard work. The costume looks AMAZING, and your dedication really shows. Do you mind if I share these videos with my former professors? I graduated from art school this past April, and sadly my school (RMCAD) does not yet have a lot of sculpture options for illustrators and animators. I want to show them what kind of amazing work can be done with this medium.
Seeing your presentation made me miss art school too. =)
I'm really really impressed, seriously... I can't wait to see the costume with the completed mouth and palette, with the clothing as well! If you ever visit conventions, PLEASE bring Haze with you. I would love the chance to see it in person someday.
Fantastic work!!

Sure! That'd be fine, I think :) If they have questions, you can refer them to my e-mail: azurilgen[at]themadmasker.com and I can try to answer some questions (as I'm still learning too). It's unfortunate that most schools don't have a sculpture program. Our school only has a minor (which I didn't take, lol, cos I was already a hybrid major) and people are fighting like MAD to get a major in. I do believe I helped a bit with that XD Some of the younger seniors are now doing maquettes and such in their projects too. I kinda just KICKED in the door, and now illustration has to deal with the aftermath of it XD
Thanks very much! :) I can't wait to finish, that's for sure! I love wearing costumes x3 She will go to Comic Con for sure (and Labyrinth, which isn't a convention, but a party) and probably FC next year. I don't get to travel around too much, but if I can get this rolling and get more money, I would consider AC and other ones :)
Thanks again!
