Timber Wolf at the Como Zoo in St paul. This shot turned out pretty good, considering I shot this through a steel fence with little distortion.
Another winter wonderland picture, keeping with the theme of the last picture. While winter is beautiful at times, it is also cold. And it sucks. The wolf of course- she doesn't care.

You can do that with a Point and Shoot camera, but not a DSLR.
With an SLR and manual focus you can focus out the fence if both the subject, and the fence is the right distance away from the fence. Again it's tricky. The wolf has to be a specific distance away from the fence to work. Too close and you can't get the fence out of focus, too far away and it doesn't work either.
Also, the lighting can't be hitting the fence at an angle. You'll get glare off of it. I've only been able to pull this trick off a few times.

Very observant. Yes you can't get the distortion out of the picture 100%. But you can get CLOSE if you use the right aperture and get lucky with a SLR. Mind you, the same tricks you can do with professional level SLRs work with Entry level and even Film SLRs. (as I have proved here with my entry level Canon Rebel DSLR)
When you get closer to the point your seriously looking into getting one, talk to me. I can offer some suggestions. I may be a little Canon biased, but I will admit Nikon SLRs are good too. Finding a used late model or refurbished DSLR with the kit lens for under $500 is not as hard as you would think ^.^ . This would be comperable to what I took this shot with (My XTi).
