It also helps them affect a larger amount of people when alone in taverns to get more money! On an individual basis a normal mage will mop the floor with a bard. But together and in sync not much will stop a force supported by bards. Hence why the flatlands may have a lot of Bards, but also an equal amount of trained assassins, to kill the opposing bards. While the groundlings (like Seig) slog out under a cacophony of musical dueling.
