Well now I'm not so sure that the masses would be so widely dispersed. I'm gonna get a bit nerdy here, but the majority of the mass is at the core, underneath and behind (in flight path) of the wings. Sure the extremities aren't in perfect streamline, but they don't induce too much drag (feathers help that a tad, creating less turbulence behind, laminar flow effect). Overall I'd say landing would best be performed by executing a flare into a stall (basically increasing wing angle of attack until it produces no lift) and ensure 0 ground speed just above landing point, and then dropping down a few feet. Birds do this, like seagulls and larger birds of prey. /Nerd
