This is my very first attempt at a mixed media picture. I used water colours (also a first time in a long while) as the base and for the background and then added detail with three types of Derwent watercolour pencils - normal watercolour ones, Inktenses and Graphitints. Some I put water over, others I left as pencil layers.
This was a real challenge and needless to say, not my best work ever. I still enjoyed it and will continue experimenting when I have more free time. The picture is A5 size and since is cockled despite my attempts to stretch it wet, I had to take a photo instead of scanning it. The background is a lot more colourful in real life, but the photo has eaten a lot of the colours.

I definitely want to keep on doing more of these. I think with lots of practise this kind of technique will let me achieve an even greater level of detail than I can currently get with black paper and coloured pencils. Plus I have so many cool new pencils thanks to Santa that it would be a shame not to make the most out of them...
Thanks! Yesterday felt a bit like regression rather than progression, as I encountered many of the same problems with normal watercolours as I did in the past when I painted over watercolour pencils with water. Layering in traditional medium can cover a multitude of sins, though.
Indeed. I do want to get into digital at some point, especially since I've promised myself a Cintiq (or however it is spelled) screen when I pass all my professional exams. But that will be a while yet, so until then I think I ought to learn how to use my traditional tools to their fullest extent. I'm hoping there'll be some transferable skills. ^_^
