Shark Scale Pendant (Great Hammerhead Shark)
Celebrating sharks this week, with an elegant and unique pendant inspired by one of the most unique and fascinating elements of their design.
The form of this pendant is inspired by the microscopic placoid scales of the Great Hammerhead Shark (Sphyrna mokarran), which are a key feature in making these animals so beautifully streamlined and even act against waterborne bacteria.
The piece has a pleasant weight to it and is mounted on a fine rectangular link chain.
Weight of silver: 1.5g Sterling
Pendant dimensions: 16 x 18mm
Chain length: 60cm
Time taken: 4hrs
Price: R1100 (or 75 USD approximately)

Most all sharks do! They are very very small and sharp too. If you run your hand along them normally they have a texture like sandpaper. But if you run it backwards then it has the potential to cut you~
Though the odds of getting rubbed backwards by a shark in any situation is so amazingly rare given that they have to keep swimming forwards. Still sharks are cool as heck and its a facinating bit of trivia! They're called denticles too!

Mhm! I spent some time looking through various species to select the one I wanted to try first (Actually one of the main reasons I chose the Great Hammer Head was that it was one of the few I found that had been posted with the species name attached ><). They vary in form considerably between the groups and even the species though so there's a lot of scope for future pieces
I'd heard about and first seen their scales some time ago and they are fascinating features - even repelling bacteria according to more recent studies I understand - with great potential for bio-mimicry. I was going to try making something specifically anthro shark themed, but I've never sold anything to the anthro community so it's wiser at the moment not to make anything to specialized as stock

I can understand not wanting to make a piece thats catering to anthros yeah. Honestly with art pieces like yours, I would think they cater to a crowd that is furry but doesn't show it off very directly. Like they would appreciate having a shark based item on them, but its not screaming "FURRY SHARK" you know? Cast a wide net too with more general stuffs. I can see this appealing to people in the scientific community like a marine biologist.
I am excited to see what you might be working on next~

Well that's the group I'd put myself into: I made a wolf themed pendant for myself which is a wolf's eye and the surrounding markings carved out of silver plate, so it's not overtly anthro but the symbolism is there and it has as much meaning to me as if it were a full on anthro wolf themed pendant.
And I studied BDC Biodoversity and Ecology so hopefully my varsity friends on facebook will see and like and share...
It should be up on Monday, I was supposed to finish it today but an um...unexpected happy event interfered.
