Years ago, I was Props Manager on a play about a frontier family fighting off an Indian attack, which was based on local history. During the raid scene, myself and several of the crew moved around behind the set, whooping and hollering and ululating.
After the show, the actor playing the father character told us that he got chills listening to us, and imagining what it would have been like for the actual family to be pinned down like that in their isolated cabin.
I was proud of that.
The guest of honour would utter a whooping cry, and the rest of the hyenas would respond with whoops and yowls of their own. Just thinking about the effect gives me chills.
