As I've said before, Lufia 2: Rise of The Sinistrals is the best RPG ever made. I never heard of it as a kid until I saw it in our town video game rental store in 1998. I rented it just to see what it was like since I was getting tired of the standard Super Nintendo games with 5 or 6 levels with ramped up difficulty to make up for a short game.
This game blew me away. The graphics, the mechanics, and my god the story line were all fantastic. You could only rent the games for two days max, so I only made it to The North Lighthouse in the game before I had to take it back. I rented it again the next weekend, hoping no one else had rented it and erased my game. Luckily, no one did. I was able to finish the game that time.
I knew nothing of Lufia and The Fortress of Doom, the first game, so I had no idea this was a prequel to that story and I surely didn't know it was going to end the way it did. It made feels happen for me. I would keep renting and replaying it for months. And somehow the next year on my birthday, my Mother surprised me with the game. Not just any copy, but the EXACT one from the video store. The game box, Instruction Booklet and even the postcard for free offers were all with it. She convinced them to sell it to her since I was the only one who had rented it the most. I still have it....AND all the accessories.
Selan was my favorite character. That is odd for me since magic users usually aren't my type, but I liked how she had both spells, speed and strength.
Around 2007 I came across Lufia and The Fortress of Doom in a used game store and bought it so I could experience the original.....good lord I hated it. If I would have came across the first game before finding Lufia 2, I probably wouldn't have even tried Lufia 2 back then. I was able to complete the first game, but I didn't pick it up again until just this year when I was able to use game genie to try and make it easier. It still wasn't fun. I WILL say that the music, specifically Lufia's Theme and The Airship Theme are really great though.
The most random and little known games these days usually have some kind of merchandise. Either hidden away from a forgotten one time deal or something available only in Japan. I have always wished so badly that there was some kind of merchandise for this game. An action figure, a key chain, anything. At least I am finally able to somewhat make my own Lufia 2 merchandise now.
