Some idea I came up with a while ago that's based on the concept of pigeon blood rubies.
The story behind these gems is that when blood flows from a dragon's nose, said dragon can telepathically take those drops, put them together, and clot or mold them into a genuine ruby--similar to tree sap and amber. The size of the gem depends on the amount of blood, and certain rubies can grant certain abilities to the one who wields or wears them--the extent of the power can vary depending on how old the gem's creator was when the ruby was formed.
