bought some black paper, so I decided to play with it a bit.

WOW. You are really, really good at that. If you have that kind of patience, you should totally try colored pencils. I know seven secrets for colored pencils
1) You need a lot of them. Like, buy them every time they are on sale. This drawing used more than twelve different colors. Get the good stuff (I recommend Prismacolor) and one set of cheap crappy color pencils (like rose art). The cheap ones don't have much wax in them, so they let you scrap away the good ones if you've layered down too much.
2) Keep them sharp! A sharp pencil forces a light touch, and allows you to layer. A sharp pencil lets you scrap away at thicker layers as well. You'll want an electric pencil sharpener that you only use for colored pencils -- the wax
3) Use mid-toned paper (try different colored tone paper, I like brown). This prevents flakes of white from showing through, and saves you a lot of effort because it's all colored already
4) Layer in lightly. Put big swaths of color everywhere, switching colors frequently. You'll start to see the colors differntly as they interact, so it's a good idea to do big swaths lightly.
5) Build SLOWLY! This isn't ink -- it takes a looong time to build up color pencils. I do 7"x 10" drawings every few months, and it takes me more than ten hours from start to finish.
6) There are no wrong colors. Mix in different amounts of everything and see what happens.
7) Have fun! If you start to get tired of it, put it away for a few hours, days, or weeks. It will keep. And don't worry if it looks bad for the first eight hours. It takes awhile to come together.
