On Sunday night into Monday Morning I was overtaken by a bout of high creative energy. I started doodling, and I liked the ideas the penciled sketches inspired so much, I worked well through the night inking them up so I could share them here on FA.
The first was inspired from some sketches by "
tegerio" featuring a rather nervous appearing H.P. Lovecraft looking character, and I liked the idea of a friendly Sphinx trying to get romantic with him. If anything, this is one of the few human characters I've drawn recently that looks pretty close to the Author from the early 20th Century.
The second image is expressly for those who have wondered what my Winged Sphinx character "Jezzy" would look like after being dried and fluffed after her experience going through the wash cycle of Mister Foxy's mind.
Enjoy.

H. P. Lovecraft was a horror-mystery writer popular from the early 20th Century. I recently found out that he actually liked cats. The unnamed Lady Lioness just invited the Author to hear some of her Phonograph Records and discuss his latest book. -Just a flight of fancy I had. But it does generate some interesting ideas though.
Aha! I just had the image pop up in my head of Delbert opening up his front door and then trying to help Jezzy squeeze through the recently seemingly narrower doorway so he can brush her out and slick down all her fluffed out fur. He might have to consider using a 1X4" piece of planking to ease the process though.
Now THAT is an interesting point about the author I didn't know. I could have been an Engineer-Draftsman if I wasn't so biased against math. I'd fear the ulcers, the deadlines and administrators yelling at me all day more than anything.
Astronomy though... I learned to appreciate the stars and planets for what they were, and the only math I encountered was in plotting the courses and tracks of celestial objects. I agree. Sometimes calculating orbits can seem intimidating, but now in this modern age I feel it's fortunate that an amateur Astronomer can hook up a little electronic box to a telescope and track the planets much easier than it was in the early 20th Century.
AND- Mister JWK? You know your artwork featured in 'Brazzle #142 had a lot to do with inspiring the H. P. Lovecraft sketch, right?
Thanks.

Old amateur astronomer here - still use the old fashion electric motor drive for the 6" Newtonian reflector scope I've had since 1980. Used my hobby for my College lab science classes in the 80s - had one Prof at UT Dallas who built hardware packages that are still on the Moon from the Apollo program. Had to do some Trig and Calc in his classes, He taught us step by step to do the equations. I managed to work it out on paper, got the right result and was very proud of myself - never was that great in math as a kid, but if I had someone who could actually teach the steps to me, I could do very well with the advanced stuff.
Ooooh! Hey now. Too bad there's too many trees up here in the hills above Pasadena to make sky viewing at night pleasurable. Oh, Mount Wilson is a short drive away, but I hadn't been up there to see the Perseid Meteor Shower since 1989. Great to read your former UT Dallas Professor built electronics that are still on the moon though. Anyway, I have a respect and admiration for folks that can work out advanced mathematics in their heads.
I am definitely going to have to look that up. Who was it? Anne McCaffrey who wrote "Decision at Doona"? The Felinoid Hrrubans were the first "Furry" type characters that I actually Liked outside of The Pookahs, Wookies and Ewoks popular at the time.
C. S. Lewis also wrote a Science Fiction story about a manned expedition to Mars in the 1920s that had otter like people in it. He was far more successful with his Narnia stories though.

Oh yes, McCaffery's Hrruban folk. Loved that Doona novel - even got the 2 other Doona novels she wrote in later years. Hrrubans and H. Beam Pipers Fuzzy stories from the early 1960s are some of my favorite old time sci fi furre folk - along with Poul Andersons Tigeries from Ensign Flandry.
By the way, nice touch with the one sphinx doing a friendly "Chuff" I hear those a lot from the tigers at the Out of Africa wildlife park here in Arizona - I tend to chuff back to them when vistiting the park. Check out Out of Africa Tiger Splash on youtube - soggy big felines playing with hyoomons in a pool

The story in question is 'Imprisoned with the Pharaohs': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impri.....h_the_Pharaohs
I like it myself.

Interesting question. You see, ever since I started drawing Delbert and the Winged Sphinx, I imagined he was simply her "Caretaker" as she was being groomed to appear as the riddling Sphinx in the Tri-Wizard Tournament in the Harry Potter series of stories. The idea grew and grew to an idea where the deal fell through, as she was just too nice for the role, and Delbert actually made her into a "Lady". So naturally, the Winged Sphinx started feeling actual affection for her human caretaker, even though she was far more stronger and powerful than he.
So Yes. Delbert must be her special "Close Friend". After all, cutting feathers itches like crazy, and Delbert is most likely the best person to scratch her back where she can't reach.

Have a high maintenance Sphinx? Come on down to B. Kliban's Sphinx Supplies in Berkley CA https://www.flickr.com/photos/dhedw.....s/29804113648/
Glad you like that one. I have 4 or 5 books by B. Kliban - most folks know him for his cat drawings but he also drew for Playboy and for publication by Workman Publishing Co. Lot of odd and fantasy type art by him. There is one of his sphinx drawings I can't find online. Egyptian tour guide is showing off the backside of the great Sphinx to some American Tourists and saying "Spinxter!"
