This was the picture I used as reference for the pose. Obviously I changed the arms a little bit, but I've seen weirder stances from baseball pitchers before.

Making more sense now, I think the main thing that created this confusion was the jacket covering up all but the slightest hint of which leg was in front of the other and how the planted foot is positioned
