I think he's trying to limit the risk of being cought by only going in to town once, so he was able to find out there was a gym but in his haste to get in get out he didn't have the time to find out it's typing, as for not switching, general gym rules (from what we've seen in the games/anime) you can't abandon the battle you have to play it out
