The only hint to his mysterious love interest the prince met on a ball was the crystal glass shoe she lost on the stairs trying to run away at midnight. After trying it on oh so samy female feet all across his kingdom he eventually found the girl who stole his heart: A simple maidservant. Little did the prince know that all her beautiful things she wore that night, like her dress and shoes, and even her chariot and servants were only temporarily created by powerful transformative fairy magic from rags, plants and animals. And also the prince was unaware of the fact that all of it vanished away or turned back after midnight of that fateful night. All but the crystal glass shoe he had left for the simple reason that the prince picked it up from the ground with the strong wish of finding his loved and unknown girl. His wish was strong enough to force the transformative energies to stay within the shoe, forcing it to keep on existing. But as they were not allowed to flow back to the fairy realm or harmlessly dissipate, the energies in the object became penned up, twisted and chaotic.
