"I want to change things. Lost souls have wandered these parts forever. Even guided by your light, their existence is nothing but a sole raindrop in a pool of nothingness. No matter what they have done, they need something to make their definite end enjoyable. Just a bit would be enough. I can't stand hearing their fading thoughts, or seeing their dead bodies be dissolved by the storms, knowing that all has been pointless.
We have been looking for purpose for long now, my dear but I cannot support your search for the meaning of this place any longer. For all that is left in this plane of existence, we two had enjoyable times together and I believe that we can make a difference to show the lost, who seek guidance, that death is not the end. My dream of this sanctuary should now be fulfilled, where we can finally teach the souls the pleasure in life again. So what do you say? Will you join me?"
~Absinthe to Souvillaine
In the world of the living, Absinthe was a rather noble character. Under her birth name, Sanura, she found her way from Africa to France at young age when her parents immigrated due to the results of the second Matabele War, although the journey all the way to Europe would take them two years. The culture of her roots stood in their family until they eventually got split up and found their ways over the Middle Sea on their own... or not at all. From there on, Sanura learned the French language and could serve in different households and eventually take a job or two in the now popularized wool and drapery factories. Her French journey started and later returned to Marseille where she founded a family. She bought and renovated an old pub near the sea-side of the city where she specialized on serving Absinthe, which granted her the nickname following her even to her death.
The bond with her husband would hold years to come until the Second World War took her husband. From there on, she founded an anti-fascist underground circle in her pub and helped to organize sabotages and collect useful information against the German occupants.
In 1943 however, the situation more and more turned against her, so she used her remaining resources and information to smuggle her children and sister out of the country. When her cover blew and her name was made public, it didn't take long for the Nazis to capture her and her allies. She was executed in the same year.
It is uncertain what caused her soul to end up in the never land. Souvillaine, as he heard her story never came to trust her entirely. It would take a long time for her to shape him and his dead beliefs. With her help, he found purpose in the simple things again. He was pulled from his philosophical studies and learned to exchange his desire for his one and only love for the warmth of any partner.
Together, they would end up re-establishing Absinthe's pub in the land of lost souls and gather anyone willing to enjoy their very last moments with drinks and musics and shows instead of staring in the black and endless abyss.
