Rock Hyrax Ivory Earrings
It's always satisfying to pick up a natural little curiosity while I'm out hiking, or just generally enjoying and exploring the outdoors, and to use it as the centerpiece of a new jewellery creation. These two slender sickles of ivory are the upper incisors of a Rock Hyrax, or Dassie (Procavia capensis) - supposedly the closest living relative of the modern day elephant. I found the picked-clean skull of one of these animals while walking in the Cederberg during my vacation last month and when I picked it up I found that the teeth were loose. Seeing their perfect semi-circular curvature I immediately thought: "These could easily be a pair of earrings..."
Fast forward a month or so and that's exactly what they have become.~
I kept the design as simple as possible, creating a curved triangular 'sheath' into which the teeth are neatly slotted, with a long curved pin as an extra feature keeping the earrings balanced. The teeth themselves are lightweight, making these earrings easy wearing in spite of their size.
Ivory is a lovely material, if only the consumer apatite for it hadn't made the ivory trade such a monstrous institution. But I am happy to use it here in good conscience having found the teeth myself and taken them from an animal which had already passed away naturally. No animal cruelty involved, just good old fashioned artistic re-purposing~Weight of silver: 1g Sterling each
Time taken: 6hrs
Price: R1675 (Approximately 115 USD)
