Thunderbird Dash

It is no secret that I love the Ford Thunderbirds of the mid to late 1950s. So it surprised even me when I looked through my gallery and did not find a single dashboard photo. Here is a shot of a lovely 1955 model. I really like the grooves cut into the forward end of the steering column. But even better is the transparent plastic of the horn button which allows you to see the big ol' spring behind it.

Ah, you noticed that detail. I didn't want to call attention to it. That radio may be out of place, but it actually doesn't look too bad. At least it has a chrome-ish faceplate to help it blend nicely into the rest of the dash.

If it wasn't the tape slot and what I'm guessing is the tape eject button I wouldn't have noticed

how many cars have a generator light on the dash these days? my first car was a 1966 Thunderbird... I couldn't even afford gas for the darned thing...

I'm jealous of that 1966 T-Bird. I think that was the last year before they went to the "faceless" look with the hidden headlights.

I think it was the height of its beauty... they did away with the heavy upper lip look of the 64's. Mind you I couldn't afford tires or gas for this thing. I was only making $100 a month as a seaman (E-3)...

Dig that floor shift auto O.O I wish they put a bit more ornamentation on newer cars. You'd think with higher tech manufacturing they could do a bit more.

Although when you look at all the options you can get on the current Porsche 911 some makers give optional details.

With all the chrome around the base of that shifter, I could have taken some photos of that alone. Unfortunately, I didn't see the owner around and didn't dare just climb inside without an invitation.

That "jet soundwave" effect inside the horn button is truely oldschool of 3 dimentional art.

It's very ironic, that we have all those polymer technologies at our disposal now, and our cars have one-piece abs covers, presented in "50 shades of homegrown mediocrecy".
