It had been three busy weeks at Newburyport. A group of scientists, mechanics and other smart guys had come to the arkship to, under the supervision of Dagon, try and repair the hibernation systems, mainly the reanimation part.
Meanwhile, Syssim had given back the library, and spent all this time trying to reassure the citizens of Newburyport there was nothing to fear.
Barry had to go back to Salt Lake City, and couldn't help anymore, but gave Syssim an old second-hand phone and his number to keep contact and call for help if necessary.
But now, the hibernation systems were finally repaired, and the time to reawaken the 999999 other Deep Ones had come.
So the UN Peacekeeper squadron that had been sent to escort the relief force entered the Y'ha-nthlei. Their task was to supervise the reanimations and carry the reanimated ones out of the hibernation rooms and to the base the relief force established in the arkship, where doctors would take over.
So now, they were in one of the hibernation rooms, listening to Syssim.
"Okay, Dagon is going to deactivate one capsule and reanimate one of my brethrens. That'll be both a test of if the repairs work and of how the teamwork can be made better. A volunteer to help me?"
There was hesitation among the peacekeepers. Even after the appeal, there was some wariness from them in the situation.
(Again, Syssim cursed silently the name of Lovecraft)
Finally, one, Jill Anderson, advanced.
"Thanks. Dagon? Go ahead."
Understood.
After a few seconds, one of the capsules hissed as the fluids within were evacuated, and its red light turned green.
"Okay, let's go."
They approached the capsule and opened it.
The Deep One within stirred and moaned weakly.
Syssim heaved heavily. The moment was important...
Slowly, the Deep One opened his eyes and looked around.
He looked upon Anderson.
And screamed.
Shocked, Jill instinctively grabbed her taser gun.
"NO!!" yelled Syssim. "Let me!!"
He began talking hurriedly, in that harsh-sounding language of theirs, to his brethren, who was still screaming and thrashing in his capsule.
Jill, while obeying Syssim, still kept her hand on the taser, glaring waringly at the Deep One, wondering what the hell was wrong.
Finally, he calmed down, but still shot glances at the human woman.
"What's wrong with him?" she asked to Syssim.
"You scared him."
That wasn't the answer she expected.
"What?!"
"He was screaming to me "Help me! A monster!". Put yourself in his shoes, he wakes up from hibernation to find a being he never saw before right next to him..."
Jill felt very awkward.
"Come on, help me get him on the stretcher..."
Indeed, the Deep One visibly looked dizzy after getting so brutally excited right after waking up.
When Jill advanced, he flinched, but a reassuring look from Syssim convinced him to let her touch him.
The rest of his evacuation and treatment by the doctors went without problems.
But the reanimations were abandoned for today, because it was clear that it was absolutely necessary to find a way to make the first contacts much smoother, otherwise the reanimation would at best take too long.
Syssim and Dagon were pissed at this setback, but comforted themselves in the fact that one good thing came out of this incident: the peacekeepers' wariness was gone.
After all, when another being gets scared of you thinking you are a monster, it is pretty hard to consider him a monster... deadpanned Dagon, eliciting a snort from Syssim.
