Joshua Character Sheet
Been working on this one for a while ^^;
I wanted to do this for my
since we first met here on FA, when we were only just getting to know one another. Finally got the chance and started on it nearly a year ago, but still didn't really see more progress till this past Christmas. We sat and fussed over it together so that Joshua could become exactly what he wanted. :)
He's had some changes from previous drawings I've done of him even. Like scales to hint at his dragon half.

First off let me say that this is an amazing reference.
Secondly, and please don't take this the wrong way, but how can you reconcile drawing an unnatural pose like the one on the right? See, I'm attempting to draw my fursona in a decent reference sheet, something where you can see all of her markings and pattern with all of it's little quirks without being hidden behind arms or legs or things, but I simply cannot get a full frontal picture like you've done here. I've been researching and pulling up references by other people to get an idea of styles, but I still can't seem to get the pose down. My sense of natural anatomy isn't letting me bend her in ways that she wouldn't normally bend, even though that's what I need for the reference sheet.
I am sorry if any of this seems offensive, as I can tell the wording of my question is rather indelicate, but I am merely curious, how do you combine anatomy with a forced pose, like the full frontal? Any tips you could give would be extremely helpful.
Thank you and once again this is a fabulous image.

I'll try to answer this in the first place ^_^
1. The Sheet has many more or less hidden references and ideas based on concerning poses, imagery and composition and so this front view is no exception. So those who actually bother to take a deeper look (or simply ask), will maybe recognize what was originally behind it.
2. It's always a very tough thing to come up with a decent front view on any sheet, you said it yourself and so the first concern should be to find a good compromise between a "natural" pose and one that displays the character in a suitable way. Of course, it looks a bit stiff and is probably no pose anyone would take in an everyday situation, but a character sheet is also no situative picture. it's more like a modeling sheet.
3. I personally have no problem to stand like that, I guess it's a matter of flexibility. Still, surely no position I would take naturally and by myself, but after all it's only one of these "nailed to the cross" poses and was probably already seen over 1000 times already in commercials, games, magazines etc.
4. I also think that "sense" of anatomy you are mentioning, is a matter of subjective perception and experience or a question of the style and "theme" you'd want to draw in, after all we are in a fandom which features art about inflation, vore, unreasonably muscular characters, tentacles etc. So it's of no real reason to brag about everything which is not 100% anatomicaly correct, just let people do their stuff and if you don't like it, ignore it ;)
Greetings,
Joshua (The guy on the sheet =P)

As an addendum to the reply I gave UV, I'm sorry if I came across as bragging about my sense of anatomy, I didn't mean it that way. I don't have the best grasp on it, but I have a certain gut feeling about how things should look when I'm drawing, I guess you'd say matching up the picture on the paper to the one in my head more than anything else. And what I meant was that the stiff "on the cross" type pose makes that internal sense twitch that something isn't right. Sort of makes my arms hurt thinking about being stuck in that position, you know? ^_^;
Also, hidden references? I'd love to know more if you're willing to share.

Thank you.:)
And I am not sure what I can add to some of what Josh has already said.
Though I can say, I went through a few different poses before I settled on that one (which to be honest was something Josh had wanted and suggested).
I generally have a really hard time pulling off frontal views as this, especially with legs and faces. I probably spent a day or two just on trying to get something that looked decent on that pose alone.. (Josh can attest to this as he dealt with me getting stressed over it, bless him for putting up with me). I am not sure how it is a particularly "unnatural" pose, though. Not relaxed sure, but it is not particularly extreme to be an unnatural one.
Though apologies if I misunderstand what you mean ^^;
Anyway, If you are having trouble with your sheet, may I suggest looking at the design sheets that are done by professionals for games and such , if you have not already. They are generally drawn in a way that shows off their features from 3 or 4 different angles so that they can be then made into 3d models or such.
I'm not sure if I answered your question, but well if I can be of any more help, feel free to note me and we can talk about it more :)

Thank you both for responding. I can relate to your frustration and the blessing on mates that put up with it. By "unnatural" I meant stiff and rigid, which is not a normal state for the body to be in, even if (as Josh said) it can be forced into that position. It's definitely not extreme in any sense of the word, just not what would be seen in a (again as he said) situational image, at least not without some interaction to go along with it.
Thank you for the game designer idea, I totally did not think of that, but it is in essence exactly what I'm trying to do, as the reference sheet I'm working on is going to be the basis of my fursuit design.
I hope that neither of you were offended by anything I said up there. I truly didn't mean to if I did.

I am still always very proud and honoured that you trust me to help in his design and well in a way, his creation.
As that is something that has always really meant a lot to me ^^;
Perhaps soon we will be collaborating together :)
I love you my dear and my eyes are firmly set on the future, nothing can tear that away from me! <3
PS. The tag is true
