Beaux of the Ball—by BlurTheFur
Touching this painting pulled us into yet another world. Again I smelled the overwhelming odor of oil paint, although unlike before, this world was in full color. Bigby and I had landed in an expertly painted ballroom full of well-dressed individuals. Despite this, it felt more lifeless than the grayscale world from the last painting, devoid of movement in any sense as if frozen in time… until we laid eyes on a pedestal holding the key piece we needed. The world suddenly sprang to life, with the guests forming concentric circles around the pedestal and beginning to dance as classical music filled the air. Spotting gaps in the rings, we knew what we were meant to do: join the dance and reach the center. Any attempt to circumvent the obvious and disobey the rules of the game in which we found ourselves would likely be met with death.
We narrowly slid into a gap in the outermost ring, brushing against another dancer as we adjusted ourselves and finding the penalty for our clumsiness to be a painful repulsion that nearly knocked us into the next dancer. We had no choice but to move perfectly in sync with the denizens of the painting, twisting and twirling. Even with the threats around us, though, we fell into a rhythm. Having shapeshifted so many times, adjusting to the size difference between Bigby and me was effortless, and we leaned and spun with incredible grace while shifting our way to the center. With one final pose from us, the dancers applauded and ceased their movements, separating and allowing us to approach the pedestal to claim our reward.
This is a picture of the 21st in-game day of my current Pathfinder campaign with then-DM
CaitSith, and players
Serophous,
MonsterMutt,
Marshtomphappy, and
Quinn. Caught up in the whims of a childish pseudo-god, the party was forced to play life-or-death games inside his mansion, with each death restarting the adventure and leaving the party to remember the painful consequences for failure. A locked door required us to retrieve three pieces of a key from worlds within paintings, and within the second of the paintings,
Marshtomphappy's character and mine were made to dance.
Big thanks to
