Brigand is my handsome boy, who always seems to know when it's been a tough day at work and he needs to give me extra attention to lighten my spirit. I wouldn't want to do anything else, but there are times when it can feel like I stand more on one side of the scales than the other. Sometimes it's a necessity - nothing can be done, and it's time, or the injuries are so great the owners can't afford tests and treatment, or it's a stray, and the city will only authorize so much and no more and can't afford the long recovery times. Sometimes we tried our best and lost anyhow. There are many reasons, some easier to bear than others.
And then there's those like Brigand. My loyal, handsome, asshole (to other people) of a cat was a kitten when he came in for shots and I noticed something wasn't quite right. The owners couldn't afford his surgery - so I took him, the vet and I donated our time, and I nursed him over the long recovery period. I can't imagine life without him now. Even if he does drool when he purrs.

Ive got three rescue dogs in the house, and two of them acted... inappropriately when tested with cats. Nonetheless, the neighbors don't care about their cats and let them roam, bringing fleas, worms and worse around the neighborhood. I have a 5' fence around the dogs' play yard, but a fence means no more to a cat than it does to a bird. This could get ugly someday. I try to check the dog yard before I let them out but...
*winces* Yes, that's a tough spot to be in. You can't blame the dogs, and you're doing all you can by fencing in the yard and letting the neighbors know your dogs don't like cats. That's as much as anyone can be asked - responsibility falls on them now. I've seen results of that kind of situation - it's never pretty.
I like cats okay, it's just that the dogs like them... a little too much. As fast food, I'm afraid.
My brother lost one dog about six yeas ago. Half Border Collie and half Australian Shepherd, he was very shy and as gentle as the day is long. The neighborhood cats would strop him into a state of embarrassment. Squirrels ran over his paws and wild bunnies kissed him on the nose. My brother would walk him off leash, and one day they encountered a few of the local Whitetails. The dog had the urge to herd them, no harm intended. My brother told him, "Nash, leave it," and the dog lay at his feet watching the deer feed. A regular canine Francis of Assisi.

*laughs* Yes, that's the way of it sometimes. A shame about your brother's dog, he sounds like a wonderful boy. We have a client who has a cat that will bring home babies she finds - any babies - to mother them. Even brought in a wild rabbit, which promply started screaming and scared the heck out of the owners. They caught and released it and said they felt so guilty because the cat was so worried about it the whole time. XD
If I left them out for more than a hour, I'd have something like this going on.
The cats mostly tease them. Occasionally, one chunky feline barely makes it to the fence before the Black Bullet does -- and he's 11 years old.
