Keiba was given a mission by the elders of her clan to become a marine biologist to better understand the new marine life that has suddenly made the shores of her island their home, it was during a class trip to study the migration route of whales that Keiba had her first encounter with the Titan known as Gaira or as some would like to call it, The Green Gargantua. Thankfully, using her connection to the water, Keiba was able to sense the approaching monster as was able to get her team to safety just as the Titan surfaced.

Several days later during school, she was visited by two representatives of Monarch who recruited her to help them research the Titans. Being a member of the Kawai-clan, Keiba can use her abilities to detect any underwater Titan. With Monarchs help she was able to finish her studies and is now the head researcher for underwater Titans, she has taken special interest in Titanus Gojira and Titanus Gamera. Both Titans show potential coexistence with people which she prefers over killing them which others seem to want.
