GULPERS
Gulpers are toothless, slug-like beasts. They start life no larger than a human hand, but can grow to enormous sizes depending on how much they eat. Their natural lifespan is about 250 years. Gulpers are notorious for devouring anything that moves, whether it’s edible or not. Their harsh stomach acid can dissolve just about anything, including metals, and convert it straight into bulk. They produce very little waste. This makes them excellent garbage disposals, and many Aquarian peoples worldwide use them as such. However, one must be careful not to get devoured themselves.
SEA GULPER
This breed of gulper is acclimated to sea water. They are only found on the ocean floor. They are poor swimmers, instead dragging themselves about with their flippers. Their poor mobility is deceptive however, for they can create a strong suction that pulls prey into their mouths even at long distances. Even dolphins and sharks cannot escape the vacuum. Sea gulpers are toothless and swallow their prey whole. This prey is likely to survive in its spacious belly until the next time it produces acid. Particularly clever prey may be able to cut their way out with a weapon or cause the gulper to regurgitate, making their escape.
GREYWOOD GULPER
These gulpers are only found in the swamps of Greywood. Unlike their oceanic cousins, they are amphibious and breathe oxygen. They have even worse mobility than sea gulpers, especially as they grow larger. Once they reach a certain size, they become completely immobile and rely on camouflage to hide from both prey and predators. They cannot create a vacuum to pull prey towards them. Instead, Greywood gulpers have a long, sticky tongue that can extend several feet and ensnare whatever it touches.
OVERVIEW
Gulpers are predators to anything they can swallow, but they are also prey to anything they can’t swallow. Anything larger or smarter than them is a threat, so they rely mainly on camouflage to survive. They may hide in the sand, in kelp forests, or in mud for days on end, waiting for food to happen by. While they can technically digest anything, they will die without enough meat in their diets.
Male and female gulpers are largely the same in both appearance and behavior, except that females lay eggs. During breeding season, females establish a nest while males seek them out. The female lays eggs, which the male then fertilizes, and then both parents go their separate ways. The unattended eggs are in little danger, for they have the distinct taste and smell of feces. They are also highly toxic if eaten. This deters predators until they hatch.
Gulpers who find little prey will stay small. Those which eat more than they need will continue to grow to mammoth proportions, but will shrink again in periods of starvation. Gulpers have no teeth or any means to fight other than swallowing. They often swallow other, smaller gulpers that enter their territory.

All of my creatures and ideas are free to use for personal projects! However I ask that they not be used for monetary gain. If you would like to use them for your tabletop campaigns, freeware games, fiction, etc. that’s totally fine, just please give credit to “Looming Gaia Project” when possible. Thanks!
