More inspiration from an old Dragon magazine article about the Deathmaster NPC class. This guy is magically augmenting a ghoul so that it's a ghast.
The original drawing's from sometime in October and I was playing with colored pencil over marker. Which wasn't as successful as I'd hoped. I figured glaringly bright Erol Otus colors would fit the 1e mood of the thing.

This guy is from the first issue of Dragon I ever bought, way back when...that issue of Dragon came out >.>
Oh, the enchantment of those days, turning those magic pages and poring over every word. Even the advertisements had a glamour on them :)

I adored the deathmaster; I lovingly made up a character...then went and randomly generated families and such for the NPCs in the Keep on the Borderlands (my sine qua non of gaming at the time - everything happened there!) so that my deathmaster would have people to murder and reanimate XD
