More digital coloring practice. Playing with light and shade and suchlike. My slightly realistic style with a generic airbrushed background slopped about.
Pen and ink scanned in and tweaked a tad. I really live the linework you get with a brush.

He looks a bit sad, or maybe just tired.
Question: Looking at the neck fur that juts out just below his shoulder level--I noticed your lines are VERY thick there, even though it's a piece that you highlighted. Looks like you did this on the shoulder as well. I'm wondering what led you to do that?

The short answer is that the brush led me to it. The longer one is that sometimes I work over lines that I'm not happy with using the brush, trying to smooth them out to a less wobbly curve and trying to add some weight to them for shading purposes. The lines on the head tend to be smaller because it usually needs the most detail so I tend to be a lot more delicate when handling the brush there.
Brush inking for pictures is a dying art as people get used to handling things digitally and I find that to be a shame. Using a brush brings out some of the most beautiful and organic looking lines on a picture, often showing a great deal more life and depth than normal inks. But it's also a very unforgiving medium and there's no ctrl-z to fix it if you mess up. I'm determined to learn though!
