To me, few sites speak to the regeneration of Cardiff Bay quite like this spot. Today this is known as Roald Dahl Plaza, named after the famous Welsh-Norwegian author of children’s classics such as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox” who once lived in the city. Others may know is as the façade of the underground headquarters of the Torchwood Institute, or so it is rumoured, because no city screams “secret headquarters of a society into the research of alien life and protection of the earth” quite like Cardiff. It is commonly used to host large-scale events in Cardiff Bay, such as large orchestras and carnivals, the most recent of which is in the process of being dismantled and taken away (summer is officially over :( ).
Just a few decades ago, however, this was one of Cardiff Bay’s many, many docks, forming what was once the largest steam-coal exporting docks in the entire world, bigger even than New York City harbour. The walls of the old dock are still there, now covered by the steps leading down into the plaza, and serving as a reminder of what this place used to be.
Hope you enjoy!
