Well, the abused often abuse others. She didn't really start becomming a better person until she got the earth, that is when she started thinking somewhat of others than just herself and her pain. But even then, it was first when she met Greg that taught her how to love and be genuine that she first really started to change and grow.
Often I find that the fandom forgets that peice of information when they learn of how she used to be, like she was always that and never truly changed, when in fact she did so very soon after meeting Greg. Still does not excuse her behavior. Hurting people, intended or not, is not a good thing to do. She is the epitome of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions".
What are your thoughts on her?

i think that the gravity of her past actions don't really save her, esp because even after Steven was born she was still romantically and emotionally abusing Pearl (HER SLAVE). on top of that she's a classic selfish centrist who literally started a bloody civil war for her own selfish ends and then NOPED outta the conflict the moment the responsibility she was originally asking for became too much, leaving literally millions of gems to fight and die over a cause she started but had now abandoned. She also had a literal human zoo.
All of the diamonds have body counts in millions to billions. they are all beyond redemption, and Rebecca Sugar's obsession with woobifying space fascists leaves a bad taste in my mouth b/c stories about abusive family and redemption lose their narrative focus when it's put on a galactic scale and the body count gets so massive. people who are that consistently, chronically bad don't deserve redemption, even if they're family, and pushing that narrative just gaslights abuse victims to forgive the people who made their life hell. forgiveness and redemption can't be earned without proper atonement, and some crimes cannot be atoned for, no matter what.
Rebecca Sugar and the show in general are fixated on an ideal of Pink Diamond that never existed but they pretend their writing reflects PD as a paragon of justice even though it repeatedly proves her to be an abusive, manipulative bastard. maybe next time Rebecca should hire an actual writer to help her story get fleshed out rather than think just b/c she's an artist writing a story and making the art for it are the same thing.

I can see where you are comming from. I agree that in reality, the diamonds would be beyond redemption due to the sheer slaughter of worlds with life. They prolly have boarder confilcts with other organics that seeks vengence because of the diamond colonization. You are very much right that if this story was more local, as in earth based only (like in a mythical setting without the gem empire) it could work a lot better than tis glossy stage we have now.
I've learned to live with it. I accepted a long time ago that Rebecca Suger wanted to tell a story about forgiveness and love. But I agree it could be told in a more suitable setting. I guess she wanted to write a fantastical story that could draw in a wider crowd.
But as for Pink Diamond, she was gonna be a bad person no matter what. But she did not endourse the zoo. It was the result of her begging to spare earth and the other diamonds just grabbed and slapped a bunch of humans into a breeding program because they saw it as the only way to appease Pink and avoid White's anger. Pink never wanted it in the first place.
She also didn't even want the earth when she learned having her colony ment killing the planet. so, she already wanted to nope out of the resbonsibility the moment she knew she would have to kill, but was forced to do it because that is what diamonds do. in that situation, I do not really think that were many choices for her tho.
The way I see it, if she wanted to keep the planet alive she could not let it fall into the other diamonds hands, and she she couldn't leave it. Which means that she would only be able to stop it's death by stopping the colonization, which would mean to defy the 3 stronger diamonds that would power thruttle her into submission with vast armies and dooming earth regardless. (I suppose that is where the notion of her being a person of justice began too.)
My point is, she either had the choice to kill, kill, or kill. I am not defending the writing, nor the illusion of Pink as a paragon of justice (cus she aint and I agree with you there), but I am just stating that on many things she did not have a choice once Yellow and Blue finally gave her Earth. The stage was set. She was gonna be an awfull person no matter what.

Pink was taught from the very beginning that the no other life forms have more value than gems, and that no gems have more value than Diamonds. Everyone else existed to serve her. Pearl was made to serve her (And honestly enjoyed it because she was fulfilling her intended purpose). She saw life and fell in love with it, then saw what colonization did. She changed her mind about letting the Earth die, but didn't care about the other gems. Then she met Garnet. She saw gems that could change. Could really grow and evolve, like the life on Earth. She finally saw value in them as individuals and decided that the rebellion should also be to free them. She grew as a person in little steps, discovering empathy and compassion. She couldn't change what she'd already done, but tried her best to make things better. She thought the Diamonds would just leave if she died. Without her there to force their purpose upon her, they would leave, wouldn't they? They didn't care about her, they only cared about making sure she was doing her job, right? She didn't think they would react as they did. She spent thousands of years trying to heal the corrupted gems, but got nowhere with it. Then she met Greg. She fell in love with a human instead of just being in love with humans as a species. She wanted to make something new. The corrupted gems were beyond her help and she wanted to make new life, so she made Steven.
She wasn't perfect in any regard, and she did terrible things. But no one is beyond redemption. Even the Diamonds were designed by SOMEONE for their purpose. Self replicating resource gathering colonizing machines with a strict social/military structure to keep the system running. Think of how many things you've killed, or have been killed because of you in your lifetime? You don't even think about it. Chickens and cows and pigs and even the bugs you crush on the sidewalk or spiders you kill in the corner of the room. They're out of mind, just lesser things that don't matter.
The idea in SU is that even though you might think something is beyond redemption, you can't hold onto it, because it's not worth it. Holding that hatred inside of you does nothing but darken your heart and diminish you as a person. Steven has forgiven anyone and everyone, even when they've hurt him or others, because he has no need for hate in his heart. Because there is so much more to have in your life. So much more to be and grow, and you can't do that if you're held down by the chains of revenge. You can always work to make life better.

You can make a change~"
