In 2016 I got asked draw illustrations for a revival of the characters Heer Bommel and Tom Poes, created by Marten Toonder. It's a bit much to explain right now, but they are classic characters in the Netherlands and were a big part of our culture and literature, so it was a huge honor and a big challenge. They lived in comics and books (and for a brief period in a small theme park), but some of you may remember the English dub of an animated movie called 'The dragon that wasn't, or was he?'.
The heart of the characters and their universe was in the newspaper strip, a 'text strip' which has the images on the top and written text below rather than speech bubbles, that ran from 1941 until 1986.
I got to illustrate the book 'Het Lastpak', for which I took up inking with a brush again, after only using a brushpen for years. It is a novel with 60 black and white illustrations by me. It was quite a struggle to get to know the art style, and I spent a long time studying it. Prior to then I had only known the stories through radio dramas I tuned in to late at night and the occasional comic or merch here and there, but I had never really read the newspaper strips in their original form.
Due to the book being presented to the press as the first revival in 30 years (untrue, since other artists had created several comics in the past decades) and me being *gasp* a female comic artist, it got a lot of media attention, which was both nice and very uncomfortable for me.
The second book I illustrated was a Little Golden Book, which I did fully on the ipad that I was just getting used to. That was a struggle as well! I *love* golden books so while I feel like my attempt pales in comparison to the classics, it really tickles me to have drawn one and I hope more will follow in the future.
I also got to do a few loose illustrations and covers here and there. The magazine on the right has a cover drawn by me, the comic in the background is drawn by my great colleague Tim Artz, who is the other young artist who's currently drawing these characters. For the magazine I also got to draw a 1.5 page comic for which I got to collaborate with Daan Jippes, one of my biggest art heroes, so that was yet another great honor.
The image at the bottom is the cover I drew for last year's hardcover rerelease of 'Het Lastpak'.
Sadly, any of these publications are only available in Dutch, and if you'd like to buy them they need to be imported from the Netherlands.

So cool! I love european comics.
when I'm not gawking over flying cars and scifi city scapes I always want to draw some sort of comic about characters trundling through big foresty scenes. I think I have things like Asterix to thank for that.
I'll admit I've never heard of this character before, but your artwork is beautiful here. :)

Tom Poes! I haven't seen these two since I was a kid. They were in kid's weeklies and what-not back in the good ol' days. Loved 'em. Congratulations to you for being part of their revival! And don't be hard on yourself - from what I see here, your art fully stands comparison with Toonder's!
