OVERVIEW
Most of Yerim-Mor Kingdom’s territory encompasses the vast, barren Serkel Desert. But within this desert are places where people manage to survive, using a blend of magic and ingenuity to grow food in impossible conditions. There aren’t many resources to be found here, but the Morites have done much with what little they have.
CREAMED CORN
Canned creamed corn is one of the most common foods that charities donate to the many slums throughout Yerim-Mor Kingdom, and so it has become a staple for the kingdom’s poorest. It is quite bland on its own, so the locals add whatever spices or vegetables they can scrounge up to add taste. For some it is a comfort food, and for others it only tastes like misery.
MASHED YAMS
Yams are beloved by all classes and peoples in Yerim-Mor Kingdom. They are most commonly mashed and mixed with vegetables for a quick and easy meal. This is the kingdom’s most popular crop due to its hardy and low-maintenance nature.
FULLBELLY BOWL
The average Morite is lucky to get meat, vegetables, and grain all in one meal. The fullbelly bowl is named so because it contains all three of these ingredients. In a kingdom so deep in poverty, this dish is enjoyed mostly by nobles. The common people can only dream of eating this on a regular basis.
MELON
Melons make for a refreshing meal in such a hot environment. They provide nutrients and moisture to all who eat them, and no part of the melon is wasted. After eating the fleshy inside, Morites dry the skins and use them as bowls.
FISH STICK
One may wonder where to find fish in the dry Serkel Desert. But Yerim-Mor’s territory also covers coastlines and rivers containing all kinds of life. Fish was very popular in the old days, but since the Gold River War, Yerim-Mor’s waters have become very polluted and fish is only eaten as a last resort. Today it is considered a wretched peasant food, more likely to make someone sick than fill their belly.
DATES
Dates are nutritious and travel well. They are favored by caravans who make long journeys across the desert. They can be eaten raw, but one must be careful not to eat too many, for they have a laxative effect. Dates only grow around the Gold River area, but are distributed all across the kingdom as one of its most popular crops.
SKEWER
Bowls are not always convenient or available for the peasantry. Sticks, however, can be used in their place. A skewer is simply scraps of food skewered onto a stick. Wealthier individuals have turned them into an art form, making intricate patterns out of food upon shaped rods.
CANDY PEARS
Pears rot away quickly unless they are preserved. The Morite people often preserve them with salt, sugar, and spices. Candy pears are enjoyed by all, and how they’re made depends on what spices are on hand. They can be sweetened with sugar or spiced up with pepper. The pears are cut horizontally in half and then slathered with flavor.
FRUIT JUICE
Water is refreshing, but a little extra zing can make all the difference to a desert-dwelling Morite. While nobles sip pure juice squeezed from fruit, lower classes drink water with a small amount of fruit juice mixed in. Lemons, limes, and melons are popular flavors. This also helps mask the naturally foul taste of Yerim-Mor’s polluted water.
