This fine specimen of STOL is called a CarbonCub. It has 'experimental' on the tail along with the N number. I bet it's quite the flyer.

Yes, we're a small airport so they do have noise abatement.
I had a room mate once who had an Aeronica Chief tail dragger. He took me for a ride and then warned me that he was going to keep the tail in the air as long as possible when we landed. That had me just a bit worried.

Nice!
Interestingly, wuff has been enjoying the "STOL Competition" vids on Youtube the last few days. Carbon Cubs have definitely ranked high in those.
The Reno air races have a new STOL event this year - - a STOL "Dragrace"! A very short side-by-side course. Take off from a marked line and fly a very short set distance to another marked line. MUST touch main gear down behind the second line. Then come to a complete stop, turn 180, and fly back to starting line. There, must touch main gear down behind the line (tail can drag early). First plane to reach full stop back at the start/finish wins, and they measure time for the full round-trip.
"Scratch" or disqualification for touching main gear down at any point between the two lines, or for crossing center line.
The demos/qualifications were certainly fun to watch on Youtube. Wish wuff could have seen them live.

If you'd like more info and some vids of qualification and practice of the STOL Drag race, here's a few YouTube videos you might enjoy.

Air Tankers are working out of the same field they're holding the Reno air races on, to support the Walker Fire in CA. If you're interested in those fire tankers, Juan has some good footage here:

Vrghr can strongly recommend checking out his channel.

He's a former USAF pilot, with multiple ratings. Now a 777 commercial pilot. He's also an independent reporter for a local paper in Orolville CA, and covered the Ororville dam catastrophe there. He's also covered the news about the 737MAX and other incidents, in clear, no nonsense, non-political, but easily understandable terms. You might like some of the stuff on that channel.

As a off-airport pilot I like the idea of a stol drags! We are playing I am working on right now is not really designed to do stol drags it's more of a testbed for an airfoil and airframe layout but I suspect it would do reasonably well providing you don't put too much side load on the gear. I hope to have preliminary drawings up sometime soon working out all the little niggly details to make things work.
There are many videos of folks with this type of plane, Kit Fox is very popular brand of this type of plane. Folks use these to wander around the wilder areas and land them ... anywhere. I mean anywhere. This is the plane you use to land on the shore of an isolated river and fly fish or land on the side of a mountain or isolated mesa in the middle of nowhere and meet up with a half other dozen planes from all over the country. There is quite a culture building around these type of bush planes.
I'm into FAR Part 103 aircraft, but I might have to upgrade my eventual licence to LSA to get an aircraft that will pick up a 300lbs fatty like me... so I watch a LOT of aircraft build videos
that guy is the same one that built the DRACO https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn9LjYy03uw

The Carbon Cubs are nice airplanes but they also command a very high price for just the kit that's before you put it together. It's not uncommon for the Builder to have $125,000 in the plane.
As for speed they're not too shabby with the IO-360 they put in them. High cruise right at a 100 knots with the big Tundra tires I understand. But you're also sucking fuel down in about 15 Gallons an hour.

You've probably heard the news by now, but one of this wuff's favorite STOL aircraft, Draco, crashed and was totaled when attempting to depart after the Reno airshow. Luckily, no one aboard was hurt, but the plane appears to be a total loss.
Here's the report the pilot put together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfctWAoDXvs
And another with more details from Blancolirio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqnp08N4qWg
Sad stuff, but glad no one was hurt.
