As an adventurous woman with a pilots licence Amy would have been one of the first to sign up for the ATS at the start of WW2.
The history of the Air Transport Service (ATS) is an interesting one. These brave men and women were responsible for delivering Warplanes from the factories to front line airfields, usually without training on the navigational instruments and totally unarmed. They also had to fly all types of aircraft every day, so they could start in a Lancaster bomber, then have a Spitfire followed by a Hurricane before rounding off the day delivering a Defiant.
