Alternatively to replacing the tape that's already there (niceu is right, it appears to be masking tape), you can wrap it with HVAC tape, which I think is usually called foil tape or aluminum tape. It forms a seal around the surface upon which it's wrapped, and will 'mold' itself onto the surface of high or low temp surfaces, like those inside a car. For example, when you seal two conjoining ends of a ductwork with the tape, it melts and forms a continuous seam so that it's airtight between the two ducts.

I bet you've long since put this sucker back into the car though, haha :)

Nah not genius, I've just worked with the tape before so I thought about it. It should work real nicely! That is, until you have to take it back off haha :)
