I'm not fully sure, but I think it's "dreds" or "Dredlock", instead of having the a in there, due to cultural reason.
Technically, it's locks of dread, from the Rastafari taking on an imposing appearance to scare off the oppressors in the Virgin Isles. The hair locked together from not washing, and the smell was really immense to overwhelm the enemy.
It's why a lot of Rastafari avoid deodorant and perfumed soap, and let their hair lock from not combing, sometimes not washing it. The not taking bath part, I think, isn't so hardcore as it was, but the musk is still a part of the culture.
Okay, I stop now, and you can also lock you hair with beeswax, if ya like to shower and comb <3
