Working on a avataresque character to represent myself on here. What kind of things should I put on a character sheet that are generally helpful? I'm new at this.
So this is my first sketch of Golly. The outfit will probably be changed and the colors tweaked, but her face, hat and most of the first outfit will go untouched. (She won't have a specific outfit, more of a specific style. Or lack there of.)
Ideas, tips, suggestions, critique is very very very very much appreciated.

I really like this. The pattern on the coat is especially nice. Not so hot on the stripes on the pants though. I honestly think it would look better without them, partially because the pinstripes make the legs emphasize how long the legs are. And considering how long they already are, it's a little much. I look immediately at the pants on that image, so it's drawing away from the face and coat.
To balance out the colors in the second image, it might help to make the sunglasses or hat a brighter color. It's all dark on top and light on the bottom. My eyes go to the bright colors instead of the face.
The first clothing design is great though. I love it. So cute. c:
Absolutely adorable character!
(I don't want to infringe to much on your stylistic choices. What I do suggest for a change though, is the length of the legs. They're longer than the torso and head. It unbalances the character a bit. Short head and torso plus long lanky legs... It's a bit of an awkward mix. I think skinny legs would work wonderfully, just not that lanky.)
I hope I don't sound too negative. It's a really awesome character design. :3

It's okay, I can't type online to save my life XD
Not only do pinstripes make legs look longer, they're a bitch to draw! I'm really unhappy with the colors on the second one, I think I'm just going to bring it all down to grays. I'm not a bright color person anyway.
As for the legs, I see what you're saying! The legs are supposed to be a lot longer than they should be for the body because it's an exaggeration of how I'm really built. All legs and no body XD If it's too awkward though I can work on it!
And no you don't sound too negative, it's good to get other people's opinions. I get stuck in circles of ideas when I'm designing x.x It's great for getting out of those circles!

I'm not a bright color person either. XD I just don't like 'em.
Maybe, if you want to keep the long legs, give them a little more detailed design? Like not just skin tight pants but a little ruffles at the end or the pants flare out a little at the feet? It would balance the detail and still keep the lanky legs. Or bigger feet might work. It needs something to balance the large head.
<3 I'm glad I could help then! I've gotten snubbed quite a few times, so I tend to get cautious. XD

This is not necessary and totally up to you, but I've noticed a lot of artists "accessorize" their avatar by also giving them wings, a tail, unusual markings, different colored eyes, or something that makes them stand out otherwise. It's up to you in whether you like this or not because I myself think it is overdone many times. And by trying too hard to stand out many just blend in with the crowd.
Still, with the way Golly looks some little wings or a whip-thin tail would look nice on her. But see, her simplistic design is good though and it makes her incredibly versatile, so again it is just a suggestion on something to consider. Go with what you like to see on characters, and something that can represent you in some way. That's the main focus.
On my avatar, he's a caracal, but I gave him a dragon tail with a living gem on the tip, and I really like how it turned out for me.
As for character sheets, many times it is good to put something about the avatar's personality. Many traits will match your own but she does not have to be exactly like you. She could have exaggerated traits, desires, quirks, or emotional conditions that you don't have particularly, but they still represent you somehow.
Little details are fun too, like you could put where she got that hat, if she has actual cat ears under it, an insert of her eating her favorite food, how many times she had to slap a fool for trying to take her awesome cape, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions! The reason I tried to make this character is that I don't really have a fursona or an avatar character. I don't indentify with any kind of animal or animal characteristics so I tried to make something neutral.
Thanks also for the tips on the character sheets, but I already have them down pretty alright. I have a couple in my gallery already. I should probably update the comment on here, but I wasn't expecting a response so late after I posted this (it's been over a year XD) This character is kind of dead, I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to redesigning her.
