The moment, at dusk, when Matthew climbed out of the river, he ran. All he could think to do was run until his paws bled and then run another mile; as long as it meant getting away. It could only remember falling off the bridge, and then he was under water. He climbed out of the river with no sign of the bridge he fell off or even the campus. All he thought to do was run away from where he last saw that thing.
"Matthew, Calm down!" Brian shouted below him, his shadow waving over and over.
"Yer safe, lad." Matthew heard Lass shout, "If ye keep going ye gonna get more lost!"
Matthew did end up stopping, it was long after he got tired though, and fell into a tree.
"It's alright, I know you're scared, but it's not here." Brian told him, "You got to relax."
"What happens if The First comes back though?" Matthew asked, "No, screw that, what happens WHEN it comes back?"
"Well, runn'in arond liek a chick'in with is head cut off isn't gonna help none." Lass said, "Just try ta think. Where would we go?"
"The river." Brian said, "We fell into that river and must have drifted down stream, If we follow it up, we could-"
"I'm not going back there!" Matthew said, "What if it's there?"
"It's been everywhere we go?" Brian said, "We can't run from it, we 'ave to face it."
"IF I DO THAT WE'LL DIE!" Matthew shouted, "We need to try something else."
"Isn't ther some other way we could go?" Lass asked, "We don't got anyone to worry aboat after attacking our friends."
Matthew looked around and started walking, "Maybe we should for a road? We find that and we can find civilization."
"A good start, but It'd recommend going south, not east." Brian said, as he walked with him, "The river was going south, we'll have better chances of coming across it because there may be a road either along it, or leading to a bridge that goes over it."
Matthew's ears went to the back of his head, and walked south.
When the sun had passed the horizon, Matthew had found a tar road and walked up it. It took, maybe, another half hour before he started to make out a building in the distance. He started to jog a bit more and saw more of them, the start of a small town, leading into a larger city. Mathew smiled relieved, and Lass cheered as he started running toward the nearest building.
As he started to run, the dirt and rock under his paws sounded more and more like the tapping of tiles. Matthew stopped and looked at the ground, but it was still dirt. "What was that about?" He wondered and looked around. After a short while, he shrugged it off and started walking. The first building he came to was a gas station, and was greeted by the tiger at the counter.
"Excuse me," Matthew said, "Where am I?"
"Wenachee." He said, "Where've you been? You looked like you fell in a pool."
"A river." Matthew said, "I... I don't know how long though." Then he looked around, feeling his stomach.
"Check your wallet." Brain said, the shadow cast on the end cap of an aisle. "Maybe we got enough quarters."
Matthew reached in his pocket, but he heard a "Tink, tink." sound from his pants and he pulled out, glass shards with red and blue fluid on them. He jolted back and dropped the glass.
"You alright man?" The tiger asked, "You need an ambulance or something?"
Matthew looked to him for a moment, then back to the glass that was... no where, it didn't even touch the ground, it was never even there.
"Brian?" Lass asked, from the window, "Wha' the bloody heck was thae?"
"I don't know this is new." Brian said, "This might be a side effect of high adrenaline, like the aftermath."
"M-maybe.." Matthew said, feeling the side of his head, "Maybe..." He looked at the ground again, and there was the glass again. The blood was all that was around it, and it was spreading, like a spill. Before he could speak he could feel the side of his head aching again.
"Dude?" The Tiger was watching him, "You're starting to worry people, what's wrong?
"Matthew, Calm down." Brian said, "It's not real, why didn't you hear it hit the floor?"
Matthew didn't listen though, he knew that sign of blood spreading, and tried looking for The First. Most he saw was the tiger wanting to help him, and a cougar standing on the sidelines, as well as a horse over by the beverages. His head still hurt with the blood now at his paws. His heart was racing and he dropped to a knee. He was having a panic attack out of nowhere.
"Oh gosh, Let me call the police." The tiger said, running for the landline.
Matthew didn't answer, he let go of his head, and went silent.
