Oh! Now I get it. I remember an old ranch hand telling me of a "Goat like critter" that lived in the mountains, and one of the adaptions it had to live on the steep slopes was that two legs on one side were shorter than the other.

in France, it's more of a story people from the countryside tell to city slickers (to bring them in crazy "dahu hunts" where they end up waiting alone on the mountain, or some other kind of mean jokes like standing still with their feet in a river so the critter won't "smell them" , haha )

Hee Hee Hee! Yeah. They call that sort of thing a "Snipe Hunt" here in the US. It's very much the same idea with the same cruel pranks pulled on the "Uninitiated" to Nature. I read a story of one fellow who wised up to the joke, somehow managed to capture a live skunk in a sack, and brought his "Snipe" back to the camp. Of course the pranksters got their just deserves when the skunk sprayed the fleeing campers once it got loose from the bag.
