Good old fashioned southern house spider female (Kukulcania hibernalis) doing what it does best... being a house spider.

The up close nature of the photo threw the perspective off a bit. It was bigger than any house spider I've ever encountered before, though, at somewhere a bit over 2 inches. I guess she was well fed.

My first encounter with these had me very confused. They look so much like mygalomorphs. :)

Indeed... I suppose the best way to tell the difference would be the web. What with its cribellum, this beauty will of course produce a woolly silk which is quite different from the gluey webs of the mygalomorphs.

Unfortunately my first find of these was a co-worker who brought it to me in a jar trying to figure out what it was, so I had no web to go off of.

Ah, yeah, that would be a problem... I suppose then you eat it... Cribellates go best with red wine, of course.
